**Location**
This course is run at our Canterbury Campus in Kent. Canterbury is just 50 miles south-east of London and less than an hour by high-speed train from St Pancras. Located on a UNESCO World Heritage Site the campus offers state-of-the-art buildings, right in the centre of a vibrant and world-famous cathedral city. You’ll benefit from a campus with excellent learning and teaching resources, music venues, a superb sports centre, a well-stocked bookshop and plenty of coffee bars and places to eat. Discover how to utilise your writer’s journal to boost your creativity and wellbeing. Learn how to draft, edit, and revise your work, building a workshop practice with your peers. From tackling briefs and meeting deadlines to improving your research and time management, you’ll get all the skills you need to grow as a writer.
These bite-sized modules are designed to help you settle in and develop core skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and sustainability. You'll engage with contemporary, thought-provoking topics and issues, giving you the best possible start to your studies and helping to maximise your chances of success.
Build new worlds! In this module you will explore the wide diversity of genre writing, including sci-fi, horror, romantasy, solarpunk and hybrid forms like speculative memoir. You’ll learn how to subvert expectations to create fresh, exciting stories. By studying the history of genres and current publishing trends, you’ll discover how to write for, and sell to, your chosen market.
Bend and break the rules! This module gets you playing with experimental techniques including cut-up, erasure, and collage. You’ll choose your own adventure, creating interactive fiction and branching narratives that read like games. Whether you’re assembling artefacts or designing immersive experiences, this is your chance to turn your creative ideas into something truly innovative.
These modules recognise the value of combining knowledge, methods, and perspectives from different disciplines to address a variety of challenges and opportunities in diverse contexts. You’ll choose and study two of these modules. They’ll broaden your learning experience and give you the chance to work and collaborate with students from other subjects.
In your second year, you’ll complete either a Client Project or an Innovation Challenge. These modules give you the opportunity to gain real-world experience by practicing client relations through a collaborative project.
In this module you’ll engage with the art of long-form storytelling, from crafting novels and memoirs to writing plays for the stage, radio, or screen. You’ll also explore epic poetry, poetry cycles, narrative nonfiction and hybrid forms that blur the lines between genres.
When you’ve settled on your project, you’ll learn how to prepare a synopsis, cover letter, and everything you need to pitch your work for publication.
