An introduction to the construction methods, techniques and technical detailing involved in the construction of small-scale domestic buildings. You'll also develop the ability to understand and interpret construction drawings.
This module introduces the fundamentals of law in relation to the built environment, covering tort and contract law in its simplest form. You'll gain an understanding of the legal concepts associated with construction practices, as well as those in professional areas. We'll explore the regulations that govern the construction profession and examine various forms of contract and their impact on works. You'll address these themes with a focus on specific cohorts, and you'll have the opportunity to work together on a group project. This will help you begin your journey of collaboration throughout the course.
Understanding the properties of materials is essential both in design and construction. You'll look at a range of materials, including metals, cements, concrete, engineering soils, and clay brick.
An introduction to building physics and the building services systems found within dwellings, with a particular emphasis on low carbon buildings.
In this module, you'll examine how contractors are selected, the principles behind their choice, and the ethical considerations in their assessment for selection. You'll gain an overview of different procurement routes, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages, and learn how to identify the most appropriate routes for specific projects. You'll also explore the principles of contract valuation, addressing the mechanisms for undertaking them effectively. Since valuation is important to contract progression, your role as a quantity surveyor will be to ensure that contractors are neither under nor overpaid. These concepts will be covered throughout the module, and whenever possible, you'll be exposed to real-life valuation situations to help you develop your skills.

You'll review key health and safety legislation, covering things like Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), working at height, corporate manslaughter, and corporate homicide. Following this, we'll analyse the systems used to identify health and safety risks and learn how to mitigate those risks. You'll also explore corporate social responsibility and ethics by evaluating best practices in the built environment.
Gain in-depth knowledge of economic and financial drivers of commercial management, control, and decision making within the organisation, and develop a critical awareness of the effects of the wider economy on the commercial decision making in construction organisations.
This module enhances your understanding of integrated project delivery, alongside your knowledge and skills in Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologies, incorporating industry-recognised standards and competences. BIM Process & Philosophy places particular emphasis on applying BIM management tools, such as Navisworks, to aid the design, procurement, and construction of a built asset. Through a combination of lectures and practical sessions, you'll learn how BIM management tools can be used to manage, support, and improve the quality of the construction process.
In this module, you'll analyse a range of design, technical, and managerial challenges in relation to a complex construction project and develop appropriate solutions. Your assessment will include both an individual and a group component. In the group component, you'll collaborate and role-play as part of a construction company team. Your goal will be to bid for and win a design and build contract for a large building. The project will require you to consider all aspects of construction, including conception, detailed design, cost estimation, scheduling, low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies, building services, legal matters, safety, site logistics, commissioning, operations, building performance evaluation, and demolition and recycling.
Develop an in-depth knowledge of financial and commercial management practices within the built environment. You'll gain a critical understanding of financial information and commercial awareness to enable you to make informed commercial decisions.
