Overview of the Programme

This course will help you develop integral industry-relevant expertise to become an agile and adaptable computing specialist. This professionally-focussed programme gives students whose first degree isn't in computing (or whose computing degree was awarded some time ago), the skills needed to become a practising IT professional.

The course includes a variety of teaching which will equip you with the core knowledge to become an effective practitioner in the computing industry. You will be given rigorous insight into computer programming and database systems.

To apply your learning you will complete a project which typically involves the design and implementation of a significant piece of software. You will be supported and guided by experienced staff, to assist you in your studies.

Key Course Features

  • This course provides an opportunity, for those whose first degree is not Computing (or whose computing degree was awarded some time ago), to study at a postgraduate level.
  • We provide you with specialist, technical skills in the areas of networking, web and mobile development, or Professional Issues and Professional Practice;
  • Our graduates are skilled practitioners. Throughout their time with us they develop an advanced understanding of, and competence with, the hardware and software available and/or needed for the development and use of computer systems;
  • You will have the support of research-active experts who will enable you to access, critically appraise and disseminate research results;
  • Lecture, tutorial and practical sessions are enhanced with additional, resource-rich, online materials to support your independent learning;
  • This course will provide you with a sound basis for further research and/or professional development.

Career Prospects

Successful completion of the course enables you to put greater focus on your future career in the field of Computing or the educational paths. You will have the knowledge and competence necessary to continue to develop professionally in the workplace. You might take the opportunity to progress to higher-level academic investigation.

It is expected that you will be able to gain employment at higher technical and managerial levels, develop particular specialist technical and consultative skills, and be capable of embarking upon Doctoral level study.

The standard entry requirement for the MSc programme is an Honours Degree of at least 2:2 classification or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a subject other than Computer Science.
