The innovative PhD in Classics and Ancient History allows you to immerse yourself in a chosen research field. Study

Course Overview

Students work independently under the close guidance of an academic supervisor. Full training in research methods as well as in ancient Greek or Latin are provided as required. We also run an academic German class and reading groups on specific topics.

Areas for PhD supervision

The Department offers expertise in a wide range of research areas including Epigraphy; Numismatics; Visual and Material Culture; Art; Ancient Medicine; Ancient Athletics; Greek Social and Cultural History; Sexuality and Gender; Ancient Rhetoric; Augustus and the Early Principate; Greek Religion and Greek Sanctuaries; Greek theatre; Greek Literature especially lyric poetry; Greek Political History; Latin literature (Republican and Imperial poetry and prose); the ancient novel; Geography and space in Greek and Latin literature; Classics and Theory; Roman philosophy; Reception of Greek Thought in Arabic Culture; Platonism in the Renaissance; Roman cultural history; Roman Economy; Roman Syria; Sicily and North Africa; The Western Mediterranean.

Teaching and Learning

Entry requirements

Entry requirements Applicants will need to have achieved a First or high upper Second Class degree in Classics/Ancient History/Archaeology and to have achieved or be expecting to achieve at least a high merit mark on a Master’s degree in a relevant subject to be considered for entry; standard offers for successful applicants will typically be conditional on achieving a merit mark in a Master’s degree (where applicable).
