UCL (University College London)

UCL is great- the teachers are thorough and clear, the facilities are extensive and the student union organises many activities. However, since COVID the lack of face to face teaching has made the year a lot more difficult. I’ve felt isolated from peers on my course and like I’m pretty much teaching myself the degree. I only have to go to campus for lab practicals which probably works out 3 times a term.

UCL has been a great place to study at as it has a wide range of facilities available for all students to aid with our studies. It makes studying so much easier when you have everything available to you. There are many libraries available at hand which have all the books you could imagine. One aspect which is difficult is the more social side. Seeing as my course is all online, it’s difficult to make friends. This has been a struggle as some days I find it hard to find the right motivation. Seeing as my lectures are all online it can also be slightly monotonous but the many library facilities has helped with this.

Had a great time so far with all my friends. Would like to see a 24 hour library that is also open on the weekends though. Also the accomadation whilst excellent doesnt have enough halls.

I can not believe they closed the Starbucks here it's crazy. I have no idea what the student union do. Oh and they need better bathrooms and kept in a lot better condition.

I am really enjoying studying Biomedical science at UCL, but the course is hard and very demanding. In terms of social aspects however, it's great and there is a lot to do in London. Just be prepared to work. I would say that some teachers need to develop better teaching and communication skills. That is the downside to studying. I live in Hughes Parry halls. It's great fun and they throw really good parties. I am also really enjoying the city life. The uni facilities could be improved. most departments have their own study rooms and hubs, but Biomed students don't, which is quite unfair. I am part of the hockey team and it's absolutely great. It does take time to train and it is a very competitive sport ,but you really feel a sense of belonging and it is great fun. We also hold events at the students union which are great. UCL generally has great graduate prospects, and they already get us involved and looking at careers that we could get into with a Biomedical Science degree. Tips for getting a place at UCL would be to write a good personal statement and do relevant work experience. Get involved in clubs and think of the other qualities that would help you aside from the academic side of stuff. Saying that, the grades are still the most important.
