Course overview Take the next step with a PhD or MA by Research in Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies. At Birmingham, you’ll be a part of the UK’s only research centre to unite these disciplines. Work flexibly on campus or by distance learning from anywhere in the world. You’ll be supported to develop your research skills to successfully make original findings and prepare for your future career. Course structure Our PhD programmes are normally undertaken in three years full-time or six years part-time, and our Masters-level research programmes are taken in one year full-time or two years part-time. The period of maximum registration for a PhD includes a further year, designated "thesis awaited," which is usually a period of final revisions and more occasional supervision. Course highlights Our Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies is an active community producing world-leading research. Benefit from our expertise, which covers the East Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Middle East across a wide range of disciplines, historical periods and cultural traditions. You’ll be encouraged to join conferences on subjects related to your research interests and to participate in our lively interdisciplinary seminar series. Our researchers also organise the annual Postgraduate Research Colloquium of the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies.

Entry requirements

Youll need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area. Your academic and professional qualifications, as well as any relevant professional experience, will normally be considered and may form an integral part of the entrance requirements. If youre applying for a distance learning research programme, youll also need to demonstrate that you have the time, commitment, facilities, and experience required to study by distance learning. Youll normally need to submit a research proposal—typically 1,000–1,500 words for Arts programmes and around 2,500 words for Law programmes.
