There's more than one way into a successful career in architectural technology. If you don't meet the entry requirements for our BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology programme but you have the experience, maturity and determination to work in the sector, then this course is for you.

This foundation year isnt a freestanding degree - but its the perfect preparation for one. Think of it as the first year in a four-year period of studying that will lead to the BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology degree at LSBU (upon successful completion of the foundation year).

Foundation Year

Art & Design

The unit will introduce you to visual design and seek to strengthen your understanding and appreciation of artistic design in all its many forms. Assessment method: 100% coursework.

Constructing the Built Environment

This unit explores the evolution of domestic construction, from traditional materials and techniques to modern technologies. It examines the history of the built environment and the role of institutions and regulatory authorities in the construction industry. Assessment method: 100% coursework.

Design Concepts

The unit continues to introduce the student to visual design and to develop the students understanding and appreciation of design in its many forms. Assessment method: 100% coursework.

Integrated Practical Skills for Architecture and Construction

This module integrates practical skills in architecture and construction to provide students with a foundational understanding of design and construction techniques. It covers observational drawing, model-making, surveying, and digital tools, aligning with industry practices and project-based learning. Assessment method: 100% coursework.

Integrated Project

Students aspiring to different disciplines architecture, surveying, construction management, work together in groups of 3 or 4 to form multi-disciplinary teams to propose and develop a specific idea for a large scale development. The objective requires the development of an idea through field and desk-top research together with its development into a cohesive design proposal by further research, testing and hands on design, utilising each disciplinary skill within the team. Assessment method: 100% coursework.

Study Skills

The unit provides a foundation in study skills, methodology, and presentation for the rest of their study in the University. It develops your IT word processing and spreadsheet working skills. The unit involves group work and develops team-working skills and covers exam preparation, revision and question answering techniques. It introduces you to your own Personal Development Planning process that should grow and adapt with you throughout their course of study in the University and beyond. Assessment method: 100% coursework.
