Biomedical Science is the integrative scientific study of biological issues related to the support of the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions that affect people's quality of life and it is a well-recognised, evidence inform and valued profession that encompasses a holistic and life-span approach to the provision of diagnostic, assessment and intervention. This course will explore the theoretical and practical aspects of Clinical Biochemistry within the context of diagnostic and investigative discipline of Biomedical Science using a blended and integrated learning approach that utilises a mix of on-campus teaching and online learning approaches. This innovative approach would further support the development of your learning experience alongside the delivery of key practical laboratory skills and your professional practice development. This course has been designed to provide you with a challenging, but enriching, academic experience that is geared towards you developing a career in Biomedical Sciences and the Life Science sectors. This course will equip graduates with the attributes and abilities to undertake continued study, highly skilled employment or gain access to the professions. This will include healthcare, biomedical science and life sciences in Wales and beyond. By instilling both biomedical scientific skills and transferable professional practice attributes, the course will provide strong foundations that could improve employment prospects and prepare you for life-long learning via continued professional development.
This module has been designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and principle concepts of biomedical science from a scientific and practice basis. This module is a core requirement for all the MSc Biomedical Science courses offered by Swansea University Medical School. This module is available to visiting or exchange students and available as a stand-alone continued professional development module.
This module has been designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and principle concepts of biomedical science from a scientific and practice basis. The module will cover the following key topics across the life span: Human Anatomy and Physiology; Pharmacology and Toxicology; Key principles of cell pathology, clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology, and clinical genetics; Transfusion Science; Quality Management; Near-patient testing (NPT)/Point of Care Testing.
This module aims to develop students' awareness of the key issues, principles and practical applications when engaging in or supporting others' professional development both from an individual and an organisational perspective. Through engagement in theoretical and practical activities about mentoring, supervision, reflection, support and performance management, students will enhance their understanding, skills and behaviours in supporting meaningful professional development activities.
The Professional Practice Development - Leadership and Management module aims to develop the students? awareness of the key issues, principles and practical applications of leadership, mentorship, emotional resilience, interpersonal skills, dealing with uncertainty and complexity as well as working as part of a multidisciplinary team within a healthcare environment.
The role of biomedical sciences in the delivery and provision of health care will be explored and critically evaluated within this module. This module is designed to provide you with the fundamental and principal concepts of Health Care, specifically to support the role of Biomedical Science, from understanding the principles and organization of the NHS to exploring valued based healthcare. It will provide learning activities based around the various disciplines within biomedical science(s) within health care, explore the importance of IBMS and HCPC practice standards, understanding the patient experience, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and to critically explore professionalism within healthcare delivery.
This module will explore the key clinical biochemical principles that are relevant to the application of the principles of clinical biochemistry to evaluate the function of the various physiological systems, the biochemistry of the processes involved that support life; from the cellular to whole physiological systems and explore how clinical biochemistry can detect pathological dysfunction. It will critically develop your understanding of the various biochemical processes involved in the analytical detection of function and dysfunction within health and disease states across the life span.
