Why study biomedical science?

Would you like to learn how diseases occur, and how researchers and clinicians develop new treatments?

Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), our Biomedical Science degree will provide you with both general and specialist knowledge in the field of biomedical science. Focusing on how cells, organs and systems function in the human body, you will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of the pathogenesis of disease and strategies for their investigation and treatment.

During your second year, there is the option of a one-year placement within industry or at an accredited NHS training laboratory. The placement within the NHS allows you to progress onto the BSc Applied Biomedical Science course, and upon graduation you can apply for state registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC.

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is formally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

What you can do with a BSc Biomedical Science degree?

Upon graduation you will have an excellent foundation for future study or research, as well as possessing a range of strong transferable skills applicable to biomedical science and many other professions. The course will equip you with all of the skills necessary to have an impact on health, diagnosis and the treatment of disease. You will also have developed skills such as critical thinking, group work, negotiation, data handling, problem solving, independent learning and communication.

Your skills from this biomedical science degree can be applied to a range of careers such as Analytical Chemist, Biomedical Scientist, Toxicologist and Medicinal Chemist. And those who choose to do a placement within the NHS will be able to apply for a state registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) upon graduation.

As we are regularly assessed by the IBMS, we ensure students are suitably trained to progress into a wide range of specialist roles, which may include work within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or the NHS.
