Integrative biology brings together all the tools of modern biology to unravel the complexity of living systems. BSc Biological Sciences at Essex will give you the expertise to comprehend the vast and diverse world of living organisms, from the latest sequencing technologies to profile biodiversity and computational tools to understand biological systems, to genome-editing techniques used in human health and biotechnology. You will have flexibility to tailor your degree to your interests. First year offers a modern overview on diversity of animals, plants, and microorganisms, as well as cell and molecular biology, genetics and evolution. Later you can choose one of our 5 pathways. Our Integrative Biology pathway allows you to choose from a broad selection of modules across different disciplines. Alternatively you can specialise in an area you enjoy most, choosing from Human Biology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or Ecology and Conservation Biology.Research-based teaching is a cornerstone of the degree, and lectures and laboratory practicals are designed and delivered by leading scientists performing research in the areas of Genomics and Computational Biology, Protein Structure and Mechanisms of Disease, Ecology and Environmental Microbiology, and Plant Productivity. Molecular biology modules will give you access to state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. Ecology and environmental modules develop field skills. You will have the option to spend the third year abroad (e.g. USA, Canada, New Zealand, etc.), or on a placement in an external organisation (e.g. GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca). A major part of the final year is a scientific research project offered to all the students of the degree, giving you the chance to apply all the acquired knowledge and skills to a real scientific project of your own.
