BA (Hons) Sustainable Design course information

BA (Hons) Sustainable Design is about understanding how design happens and how it can be used responsibly to create a more sustainable future. This course will challenge you to look at societal issues and problems that require change. You'll investigate what can be done to encourage positive change – developing and designing proposals for change and to reflect on what the world might look like after this change.

Alongside gaining the knowledge and skills needed for design and innovation, you'll study different ways in which sustainability can be defined, understood, and realised as well as the social, economic, cultural, and political context of sustainability. You'll develop a way of thinking about design and problem-solving that leads to a rewarding career in the creative industries.

Three reasons to study BA (Hons) Sustainable Design at AUB:

  1. Design at a specialist arts university. We like to think of design as a way of thinking, or an attitude, more than just a process. Were not an engineering course, and we aren't focused solely on what's possible right now – we're trying to look at problems that form new answers surprising perspectives. Being part of a specialist arts university underlines this by bringing students together on one campus to consider each others disciplines. Our creative approach to design as a way of solving problems and imagining a more sustainable future thrives here, because we're looking for new ways to look at problems and think about solutions.
  2. We offer a unique blend of creativity and responsibility. Sustainability should be at the heart of everything that we do as designers. Our new BA (Hons) Sustainable Design course begins with that, but also acknowledges that the new problems our world faces need new, innovative, solutions – solutions that require a creative way of thinking. We also understand that we have a responsibility to ensure that what we imagine can be viable and have impact in the world. To ensure this, we've developed a balance of history, facts and critical understanding, with the development of a creative mindset.
  3. You'll work alongside BA (Hons) Digital Technology (Design). Just as professional designers collaborate freely across different disciplines, we study alongside the different courses here at AUB. In addition to our innovative Graduate Futures programme, which brings different courses to together regularly, you'll work closely with BA (Hons) Digital Technology (Design) students in a shared studio space. This gives you great opportunities to think about issues from different points of view. BA (Hons) Digital Technology (Design) students can gain a clearer perspective on sustainability issues, while you'll be
