This MA Arts is an exciting, challenging, and rigorous programme of study offering you a choice of two pathways - Photography or Fine Art - allowing you to focus on one particular discipline and graduate with a named award in that field. At the same time, as the boundaries between visual arts disciplines continue to blur, this master’s will encourage you to participate in a diverse range of activities and collaborate with other art and design students - particularly those on the alternative pathway - helping you develop as a multifaceted, original artist and practitioner. The programme brings together a community of photographers and artists in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary environment to explore the interface between media, both traditional and digital, in a stimulating and creatively enabling way. This provides a unique opportunity for those wishing to specialise in interpreting time and space while working creatively, practically, and intellectually across disciplines. Discussions and debates around the differences and commonalities of these subject areas will critically inform and support your individual creative practice, including the relevance of the written word through narrative form and theoretical studies. You will undertake taught studio-based research while gaining a strong theoretical awareness of contemporary practice, with plenty of lively debates involving students and staff from various disciplines, giving you the opportunity to share and develop ideas. You will also become part of our thriving research culture and have the opportunity to attend the staff research seminar series, where colleagues present and discuss their latest projects.
Applicants are normally expected to hold a first degree in Fine Art or another relevant discipline (minimum 2:2 or above), a professional qualification of equivalent standing, or substantial practical or professional experience gained after their initial qualification that supports their application. Depending on qualifications, experience, and the quality of submitted work, applicants may be invited to attend an interview, either at the University or online. They are expected to present a portfolio during the interview and provide a plan outlining how they intend to use the MA programme to further develop their artistic practice.
