From world-leading research to our radical approach to the histories of art, from exceptional links with museums and galleries to Brighton’s distinctive arts culture – you’ll find Sussex a truly exceptional place to work on your research project.

Areas of study

We offer research supervision in the history of art and architecture, including:

  • visual and material cultures
  • photography studies
  • sound studies
  • feminist and queer art history
  • British and North American art
  • surrealism and its legacies
  • art historiography and the history of art writing
  • history of museums and collections
  • Victorian art and architecture
  • Byzantine art
  • Renaissance art
  • art and empire
  • decolonial practice in museums and heritage
  • performance and audiovisual practices
  • ancient India and Pakistan.

You can choose to study for a PhD or an MPhil. PhD and MPhil degrees differ in duration and in the extent of your research work.

For a PhD, your research work makes a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding in your chosen field.

For an MPhil, your work is an independent piece of research but in less depth than for a PhD. You’ll graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy. You might be able to change to a PhD while you study for an MPhil.
