Art has the power to challenge society today. This course is for you if youre curious to explore the cultural, political, social and economic significance of art.
Just outside Brighton and close to London, the University is brilliantly located for the arts. Our facilities include The Keep and the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. Youll also benefit from our connections with a wide range of museums, galleries and collections. Our research informs exhibitions at museums and galleries such as Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Science Museum.
At Sussex, we ensure that you experience art in person through day-long field trips every year, and the opportunity to do week-long study trips abroad in your second year. We also provide opportunities to collaborate with nearby arts venues and schools.
During your degree, you can choose to:
discover arts relationship with feminism, queer studies, empire and postcolonialism, criticism and the media
join the Art Society to share your interest in art, collaborate and get inspiration
apply to do a summer research project with a member of faculty as a Junior Research Associate.
From philosophy to psychology and modern languages, you take electives from other subjects to open your mind to other disciplines and tailor your degree to your interests.
When you graduate, youll have the analytic and practical skills needed for work in the cultural, creative and academic sectors, among others. Youll be prepared for a range of careers in fields including curation, publishing, teaching, marketing, and more.
Careers
Art History is among the most vocational of all the humanities subjects. By studying Art History, you prepare yourself for a wide range of careers, both within and outside the arts.
Our graduates have excellent capacities in creative problem-solving, critical thinking, organisation and planning. They also understand how visual culture works – an essential skill in an image-saturated society.
Sussex Art History students are provided with opportunities to gain professional experience as researchers, teachers and in museums and galleries during their degrees.
