Our architecture degree, accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB), is your first step to a professional career in architectureTeaching is based at our Stockwell Street Building in Heneghan Peng-designed galleries. Studio-based tutorial groups provide all the skills and knowledge you'll need via a range of approaches to architectural design. You'll learn to use design software and gain visual communication and drawing skills.You will also study architectural practice, the histories and contemporary theories of architecture alongside sustainability and technology. Successful graduates will gain exemption from the RIBA Part 1 examination.
The aims of this module are: to introduce students to ways of seeing, understanding and interpreting the physical world around them; to observe and analyse architectural situations and events, their cultural and physical context to learn to look beyond the visible to uncover the unseen properties of things; to introduce students to contemporary art & design practice; to introduce the translation of your observations and analysis through the critical and explorative processes of drawing; investigate and interpret physical sites through drawings and models; observational drawings and site investigations will inform and develop strategies for individual design proposals; to learn how to develop and express architectural ideas, programmes, functions and use, through a variety of media; explore the processes of translation of sets of drawings into physical objects and models; you will develop individual design proposals, which will allow you to explore and test your emerging interests and preoccupations' through an iterative design process; there is an emphasis on research, analysis, exploration and hypothesis through project design work. Learning how to express, articulate and represent your ideas, graphically, through writing and aural presentation is an essential aspect of the course.
The aims of this module are: to undertake a series of investigations of physical and cultural context, programme, scale and material which will lead to observations, speculations, design strategies and propositions. These investigations and propositions will be presented in the form of a design portfolio; to raise the student's awareness of architecture and it's context, and to encourage a spirit of inquiry and enthusiasm for the possibilities of architectural design; to introduce architectural design as a creative synthesis of conceptual and analytical considerations; to give students the confidence to experiment with architectural ideas, and the critical and presentational skills needed to explore, develop and communicate architectural design effectively. There will be an emphasis on developing 2D and 3D drawing skills, model making, manual and digital representation techniques in the context of architectural design.
This course is for students to reflect on the ?Introduction to Technology? course and apply their understanding of it to their design projects.
The aims of this module are: to examine the cultural context of the built environment and the relationships between design and society; to introduce methods for evaluating designs of various kinds; to understand sustainability and its implications.
The course presents architecture and landscape in terms of a range of techniques for organising and ordering space. Some of these are very ancient, and found in all parts of the world; others are relatively new. They offer a way of looking at any kind of building or designed landscape and seeing a pattern in it. The course gives you the interpretive tools to see these patterns.
This new 15 credit course replaces the first half of an existing 30 credit course which introduced architectural technology. This new course will be shared with both architect and landscape students. The second half of the original course will be a new 15 credit applied technology course for architecture. Landscape students will have their own 15 credit course of applied landscape technology.
This course teaches the core activities of architectural design. It allows you to learn methodologies and test design processes. You will observe and analyse architectural situations and their cultural and physical contexts, making drawings (and using other media) to define your observations. You will investigate physical sites through drawings and models. The observational drawings and the site investigations will inform your strategy for your design proposals. You will explore programme, action and function. You will make design propositions which pursue your investigations further, allowing you to test your strategies. There is an emphasis on research, analysis, exploration and hypothesis through project work in architectural design. Representation of your intentions is an essential aspect of the course.
This course provides the opportunity for students to take project themes, ideas and designs established in ARCT 1039 and develop these further into architectural proposals, which should be sited, drawn up and physically modeled at an appropriate scale. The focus of this course is an in depth attempt at design synthesis, while providing students an opportunity to experiment with personal ways of developing and representing ideas and their subsequent translation into formal architectural proposals.
This new 15 credit course replaces the Second half of an existing 30 credit course, ARCT1066, which currently addresses issues of both technology and professionalism. This course will addresses half of that subject matter: another course is being introduced to address issues of professionalism and professional practice in Architecture and Landscape.
The course aims to make students familiar with a range of positions, through the medium of academic texts and related projects and confident in using this knowledge.
The course will allow you to explore attitudes to modernism in architecture and to develop an understanding of historical, social and critical themes in architecture, urbanism and landscape, with particular reference to the period 1750 onwards. You will also cultivate skills in analytical and critical thinking and develop your skills in critical writing and presentation.
This new 15 credit course replaces the first half of an existing 30 credit course, ARCT1066 which currently addresses issues of both professionalism and professional practice as well as issues of materials and technology. This course addresses half of that subject matter: another course is being introduced to address the technological issues.
Third year design courses build directly on ideas and practices introduced established in Years 1 and 2, so that students can expand and develop their design abilities further, with an emphasis on design synthesis. By completion of Year 3 students are expected to demonstrate that they can develop a design with greater skill, sensitivity and expertise. They are also expected to be able to show that their architectural design technology research has clearly influenced their design work and demonstrate overall design synthesis.
Students take forward the unit themes and personal research from ARCT 1041 and develop these to become a complete architectural project, that is sited and fully drawn up and physically modeled. The focus of this project is on an in-depth and rigorous design synthesis. Students must show that they have an appropriate method of working to develop an initial idea into a comprehensive and mature proposal.
The course also aims at giving the students an understanding of the industries, regulations and procedures within which the profession operates. This includes planning regulations, building control regulations, health and safety, times scales and cost constraints.
Current architectural practice requires engagement and understanding of a variety of levels of theoretical, historical, contextual, technological, cultural and social aspects of design. In order to demonstrate this understanding with some depth, the role of the dissertation is strongly coupled with a changing focus as defined by each dissertation tutorial group. The dissertation should enable students to recognize the elusiveness and meaning of written texts relative to the fixity of forms. The preparation of a dissertation enables students to use a range of skills that have been developed throughout the programme: for example, the skills of enterprise and initiative required for thorough investigation and research into a chosen topic; the motivation and time management skills necessary to produce a substantive and organised piece of written work; the ability to synthesise and integrate complex information; and the ability to develop a conceptual and critical approach to architectural design.
