With extensive input from professionals and the chance to work on authentic projects across a diverse range of sites, this course is designed to give you the full range of skills you’ll need for a career in architecture. On our Architecture BA (Hons) course, you will cover the five themes of architectural design communications, history and theory, technology and environment, and practice management and law. You'll have the opportunity to take part in a European field trip which will help you to assess historical and contemporary influences on architectural design. You'll complete two major projects, one rural and one urban in context, allowing you to develop a personal approach to architectural design. You'll also learn about environment and systems integration, constructional, structural design, environmental and sustainable design, and cultural context. We will arm you with the contemporary knowledge and skills applicable to the industry, underpinned by regular and authentic learning experiences. You will acquire key problem solving and divergent thinking skills, applicable to the wider creative industries and built environment professions. You will apply your learning to real world projects and scenarios, thereby enhancing your employability with respect to communicating ideas in written, drawn and verbal forms. The curriculum has been designed with a vocational emphasis, informed directly by the industrial expertise of staff, external examiners, and the programme’s strong relationships with local and national practitioners. The quality of our graduates leads major national and international architectural practices to repeatedly employ our students, who have consequently found employment in Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as in the United Kingdom. The skills developed through the architecture degree not only reflect and support the attributes expected of a graduate of architecture, but are also transferrable into a wide selection of alternative professional and academic pathways. The context-focused approach of our teaching is reinforced by linking the use of regional sites with relevant international field study visits to the major architectural capitals of Europe. This validates the transferability of your knowledge and skills to the world arena. Most graduates from Northumbria have secured key roles in architectural practices locally, nationally and internationally. Others have transferred their skills to a range of professions including construction, property development, visualisation, games design, urban design and manufacturing.
