University of Glasgow

Despite it's flaws - I can't imagine ever having gone to another uni. Glasgow is brilliant for studying Politics/Sociology with dedicated and genuinely interested lecturers and helpful pastoral staff. There are countless places to study on campus (although the JMS is always packed and there are rarely seats available). Coming up to the end of my second year - the course has been varied and interesting so far and has covered theory and practical remits and the staff are willing to help with assignments and exams where they can. Most lecturers have office hours and there are numerous workshops you can attend for writing skills, numeracy, and study skills. I would be aware though that for every brilliant lecturer - there will be some that you don't agree with as is normal! I would encourage any prospectus students to thoroughly research the university through alternative sources than UCAS and the uni website alone however, and would recommend paying attention to the political sphere that the university currently finds itself within. As a whole, I recommend Glasgow Uni to incoming students!

The location is great, very beautiful and many things to do however it can be hard/long time to get to for home students Lecturers tend to be great however student advisors aren’t always best suited for the student (different course etc) so they can’t help students much

Good location and a nice campus. Good teaching facilities and most locations are modern and nice to be in. The sports centre is pretty disappointing. The opening times are a joke (shuts at 5:30pm on weekends ). The gym is always packed with people and lacks some key equipment (though the equipment they do have is high quality). Personally, if I had known this before I came I would not have bought a membership, especially given the availability of other commercial gyms around Glasgow. The food on campus is overpriced for seemingly no reason. The library coffee that is made by a machine costs the same as a high street cup of coffee. This is not the case at other universities I have gone to. It seems like Glasgow University is trying to squeeze as much cash out of its students as possible. Student representation is also lacking. For example, I have no idea who to go and speak to to raise the issues above.

The level of teaching at the University of Glasgow is brilliant; lecturers and tutors are always happy to answer any questions you may have and most lectures offer advice on additional reading at the end. Throughout the first year; there are advising sessions on offer, alongside a number of optional courses regarding time management and mental health etc.., as well as a number of lectures from multiple subjects on essay-writing, referencing, and general study tips. The atmosphere on campus is amazing; between the architecture, location, and history of the university - it provides a great environment for learning and growth (which is apparent when meeting students and staff alike). The study space on campus is highly varied, with different areas offering differing atmospheres for every type of student. The MacMillan reading room is a personal favourite, while the JMS (James McCune-Smith learning hub) is always an epi-centre of life within the campus (not to ignore the vast University of Glasgow library). The student support staff have been amazing in making accommodations for both exams and everyday life throughout my course thus far, and have been highly supportive of students coming from deprived areas and diverse home situations. My only criticism is that university social life at the University of Glasgow is less friendly to commuters (especially those that travel a considerable distance) with most social events taking place later at night or when public transport is limited, which can limit a student's ability to "mingle" with their peers. However, it is worth mentioning that there is a great number of commuting students who make these events work into their schedule, and have a brilliant time! I would whole-heartedly recommend the University of Glasgow to any prospective student and hope that they can enjoy their studies here as much as i am!

The best aspects are getting taught in some magnificent buildings by some very successful and knowledgeable professors. Knowing about the professors successes encourages me to think that I can achieve great things if I work hard. I get to meet people from all over the world because of the diversity within students backgrounds. The university could be improved by providing more study spaces and seating areas. From 11 am it is difficult to find a space anywhere on campus to sit and have something to eat while studying. As a mature student with mobility issues I cannot sit on a floor or a step with no back support. I need suitable comfortable seating and if I cannot find any I have no choice but to go off campus and find somewhere else although I would prefer to stay on campus. At times I feel out of place and quite lonely being a mature student. I would like to see more support provided for mature students.
