This clinically-focused stand-alone professional development course is designed to provide an advanced understanding of the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of adults with a wide range of respiratory conditions. Taught by the University of Bolton in collaboration with expert clinical practitioners from practice, this course will support you to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions, exploring presentations and clinical management. Our experienced and knowledgeable team will support you as you develop advanced knowledge and clinical skills in the systematic assessment of patients who present with acute and chronic respiratory disease. An understanding of normal physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology underpin respiratory medicine so we’ll help you to build your knowledge of these concepts. We’ll provide an overview of different respiratory conditions for instance, pulmonary infection, airways disease, cancer, interstitial lung disease, autoimmune diseases, sleep-related breathing. We’ll also support you as you explore the role of a range of diagnostic tests (including pulmonary function tests, chest x-rays, computed tomography (CT) imaging and arterial blood gas sampling) and help you learn to interpret the results of such investigations. Clinical management in respiratory medicine requires significant interaction with many other specialties within the hospital and primary care setting so we’ll focus on building your understanding of the interface between respiratory medicine and acute medicine, ambulatory care and primary care. You’ll also learn about effective discharge planning and follow-up for patients with respiratory conditions. To benefit from studying this course, you should already a health professional with a basic understanding and some clinical experience of working in respiratory medicine.
To undertake this course, you must offer current professional registration as a health or social care practitioner with evidence of post-registration experience of professional practice; for example, registered nurse, assistant practitioner, allied health professional or paramedic. A first degree relevant to your health or social care practice is desirable and/or recent study at Level HE6.
