The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) supports registered healthcare practitioners in their continued professional development to Masters Level, focusing on their role, sector and specialist area in line with the NHSE (2025) Multi-professional Advanced Clinical Practice framework. At the beginning of the course, students will identify their own learning needs in collaboration with their Clinical Supervisor, Manager and Personal Academic Tutor to create an individualised route through the programme that builds on their existing knowledge, skills and experience, whilst enabling achievement of competence and capability at the level of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.Students can choose to develop more specialist competencies (e.g. College of Emergency Medicine ACP competencies) through the Negotiated Learning Module; or can apply to transfer existing Level 7 credits from modules congruent with their clinical specialism, through the Recognition of Prior Learning route in place of the Negotiated Learning module. Students completing this course will be able to lead and support advanced clinical practice, facilitating change in patient and service outcomes.The objective of the programme is summarised in the West Midlands Advanced Clinical Practice (Health Education England 2015, p.15) definition and in line with the Multi-Professional framework for ACP (NHS England 2025) to develop:‘A registered practitioner with an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded autonomous scope of practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context in which the individual practices. Demonstrable at masters’ level and meets the education, training and CPD requirements for Advanced Clinical Practice as identified within the framework’.
Advanced health and social needs assessment skills need to be seen within the context of advanced clinical practice, as health and care practitioners will demonstrate capabilities in different ways, depending upon the nature of their role, scope and context of professional practice. However, working in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods is a core capability of advanced clinical practice (ACP). The module therefore prepares individuals working in an advanced role with infants, children or adults, to develop clinical practice capabilities relevant to their role, sector and speciality. If taking the MSc over 3 years, students MUST start this module alongside MACP4001.
Drawing on contemporary healthcare issues and challenges, the module equips healthcare professionals who are working towards an advanced clinical practitioner role, with the required tools to analyse complex decisions from a number of different perspectives.
This module is launched at the beginning of the course and runs alongside the whole MSc; the aim is to ensure that upon completion, practitioners have achieved the NHSE (2017) capabilities for advanced clinical practice. The NHSE framework sets safe and effective requirements for advanced clinical practice, whilst allowing for local context in relation to how the principles are implemented.
This module is the first mandatory module for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice. It introduces students to Level 7 study and provides context and foundational knowledge for all other modules in the MSc degree. It enables students to explore principles, theories and concepts of advanced clinical practice capabilities including critical thinking, service improvement, and leading change.
Research is one of the 4 pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice. This research methods module aims to develop the students knowledge of the different research methodologies employed in health and care research. Enabling the student to explore and debate the philosophy and theory underpinning the practice of research, audit and service evaluation and the skills necessary to apply it to their own discipline.

This module supports the Education and Leadership pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice and the Knowledge Skills and Behaviours required for the Degree Apprenticeship. It enables learners to identify their own learning needs and the learning needs of others within their professional practice. A deeper appreciation of Leadership and Education to develop a culture of lifelong learning, will enable role modelling to inspire the future and existing professional contacts of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner. This module will explore and examine Education and Leadership theory to give the practitioner a sound evidence base to become an aspirational role model.
This dissertation module gives the student experience of individual and original intellectual inquiry and opportunity to develop mastery of the range of skills and capabilities outlined in the Multi-professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice (HEE 2017).
