Responding to climate change and resource constraints demands chemical engineers who can design sustainable technologies and deliver impact from lab to plant. The MSc Advanced Chemical Engineering (1 year, full-time) at Southampton builds that capability through advanced training in reactor design and kinetics, process control and systems engineering, and sustainable process design (including methods used in industry such as optimisation, LCA-informed thinking and techno-economic appraisal). Taught by researchers working at the forefront of low-carbon processes, fine/specialty chemicals, green energy and water/wastewater engineering, the curriculum blends theory with practice using current industrial and research case studies. You’ll apply what you learn in a group design project: working to time and budget, your team will propose, model and present a solution to an industrial brief, with deliverables showcased at our annual Engineering Design Show. You’ll also undertake an independent research project on a topic of your choice, producing a dissertation that demonstrates originality, critical analysis and professional communication under the supervision of active researchers. Graduates progress into roles across energy and decarbonisation, pharmaceuticals and bioprocessing, specialty chemicals, water, consulting and R&D, or continue into doctoral study. 97% of our Engineering research is rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).
