This degree is designed for students who have identified teaching PE (primary or secondary), or youth sports, as a possible future career path for them.
In addition to the academic content studied, all practical areas of experience identified in the National Curriculum for Physical Education are included as core or optional modules.
This degree prepares you for a postgraduate qualification in teaching and a subsequent career in education. Alternatively, upon completion of the degree, many graduates go on to careers in youth sports and physical activity.
Course Overview
The fundamental focus of the PE degree is on learning and teaching issues and many of the modules offer hands-on teaching experiences with children.
Inclusion, entitlement and discrimination issues are embedded in many of the modules, and many assessments require students to plan and evaluate their own and others' teaching.
The focus of current physical education outdoor health and adventure activities is strongly represented in the overall content of the degree. This degree is the only one of its kind in the area and differs from sports science or sports studies degrees in that its primary focus is to provide students with inclusive learning and teaching strategies so that positive experiences can be provided for young people in physical education.
Career Opportunities
Students who graduate from this degree program are likely to progress to a PGCE primary or secondary PE course or to the in-house MA Physical Education, Sport and Physical Literacy program.
