It also achieved a 5-star rating in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds Stars system for teaching, employability, facilities, innovation and inclusiveness. Facilities, location & student-life suitability The university is based in Sheffield, a city often praised for being student-friendly, lower cost than many UK cities, and with good transport connections. SHU has modern and extensive facilities, including specialised labs and buildings for engineering, materials, health & social care. For someone like you doing Mechanical Engineering with industrial placement, SHU’s emphasis on applied teaching and links with industry could be advantageous. 3. Relevance for engineering and applied disciplines SHU highlights research and teaching in areas such as materials science, engineering, art & design, health and social care. It also has strong regional industry links (given Sheffield’s industrial heritage) which could help with placements.

The best aspect is that it’s close to town and it has some good facilities such as borrowing laptops etc. The worst is that at times it could get quiet boring especially that Huddersfield isn’t a very active city in comparison to other cities.

What makes the university a great place to study is how nice the teachers are and willing to help students. How it could be improved is raising more awareness about opportunities that the university has especially for those who want to study in the University

The lecturers are lively and interactive. We had the opportunity to share our experiences at the student cafe and I love that they took note of students concerns. Generally the campus life is quite engaging.

What makes my uni a great place to study is their student support. They try to help their students in any way possible to ensure that students get the best out of their education. I think it would be better if the university put more effort into societies and clubs such as sporting clubs and teams . It would help the university to have more of a community and really showcase other talents other than what students already study on their courses. My university do have societies and some sporting teams, however some of the societies don’t run anymore and it’s not made to be as big as it was when I first heard about it before I joined uni. I think it’s important to have that feel of community and university culture and to also show the inclusiveness of different cultures, groups and activities in which people associate them selves with.

The postgraduate lecturers are great at teaching and very actively willing to engage with the students on the course. The library facilities are modern and provides access to thousands of books in person and online. The negatives are mainly about the enrolment process which is long and difficult to communicate with the university during, but once that has been completed there are no issues.

The facilities are amazing and the staff are extremely helpful. The building itself is really nice and doesn’t feel overwhelming. The only negative thing I would have to say is that unlike other universities I feel like the opportunities to do clubs outside of the institution are limited so if you are trying to make friends outside of your course it can be a bit difficult. However everything else is amazing. The food in the cafeteria is affordable and gets rotated every week so there is always something different and material cost aren’t to bad, in my opinion I feel they could be a bit cheaper however if you can budget properly then it isn’t to bad I just think that every student should be allowed an allowance given by the institution so they can afford materials. Overall my experience at the university so far has been amazing and I have learnt and refined a lot of my skills.

My favorite thing about Rave is how industry focused we are. Translating our work into the real world is discussed very often. We get talks from guests who have tons of insight and our tutors are also knowledgeable. In terms of improvement, Rave is lacking in the student life area. There are not many active societies and it can be difficult to meet people or create student lead events.

The best aspects of the University of Southampton is the great opportunities, e.g. societies and guest talks. I love going sailing on the Solent every other week and frequently running around the beautiful common. Similarly, new guest come to talk about their roles and how to get into their roles which is very beneficial for career development. There are no bad aspects that I have experienced so far.
