One of the best aspects of my university experience has been the academic environment. The University provides strong research infrastructure, access to high-quality academic resources, and a calm, well-maintained campus that supports focused postgraduate study. My academic supervision and research development opportunities have been positive and have contributed significantly to my growth as a researcher. Student support services are generally available and helpful when accessed, although administrative processes can sometimes be slow or complex. The most challenging aspect of my experience relates to student life and inclusivity within some student-led activities. While the University promotes diversity and inclusion, my personal experience within a university-affiliated acting club did not reflect these values. I joined the club expecting an inclusive and welcoming environment. However, on multiple occasions I felt ignored and excluded. For example, during a recent session, I arrived while activities were ongoing, yet no one acknowledged my presence, including those in leadership roles who were not actively participating at the time. There was no greeting or attempt to engage with me, which made the environment feel unwelcoming. This experience left me feeling uncomfortable and marginalised, and ultimately led me to leave the session early. Although I cannot speak to intentions, these experiences had a significant impact on my sense of belonging within student life. Greater oversight of student societies, clearer expectations around inclusive behaviour, and training for society leaders on cultural awareness and inclusion could help ensure that all students feel welcomed and respected. Overall, the University offers a strong academic experience. Improving consistency and inclusivity within student-led activities would further enhance the overall student experience and better reflect the University’s stated values.

The strongest aspect of my course is the flexibility and independence it offers as a postgraduate research programme. The structure allows me to develop my research skills at an advanced level, with a good balance between independent study and academic guidance. Supervision has been supportive and constructive, with opportunities for regular meetings, feedback on written work, and discussion of methodological and analytical issues. This has been particularly valuable in supporting the progression of a complex mixed-methods PhD project. The course also provides access to a range of training opportunities, including research methods workshops, ethics guidance, and academic development sessions. These are helpful in strengthening both research and professional skills, although participation often depends on the student’s ability to proactively seek out and engage with these opportunities. Overall, the course is well suited to developing independent researchers. Continued improvements in communication, structured guidance, and visibility of support opportunities would make the course even stronger, particularly for international and interdisciplinary PhD students.
