Portsmouth is a great place to study, as all of the University buildings are very close to each other and in walking distance from all student accommodation. Although at times, especially during the pandemic, it has been slightly unorganised, all of the staff are happy to listen and help at all times.

My course is taught in person, enabling the students to build personal connections, friendships and comfortable learning environments with other students. One thing that was a bit hard for me to get used to was the big difference in course material and teaching of the creative writing and the literature modules. Whilst the literature modules are very structured and completely planned out in advance, with reading materials, lecture slides etc. being available from the beginning of the year, the creative writing modules can seem a bit unorganised at times, as the professors make sure to keep an open and easy-going atmosphere at all times, to not keep you from actually writing by using through a tight schedule.

As one of the cheapest student halls in Portsmouth, you definitely get what you pay for - small rooms, small bathrooms, shared kitchens - not necessarily a bad thing, but something that you should keep in mind and mentally prepare for. Make sure to do an inventory check when you move in and to take photos of any flaws you may encounter to avoid getting charged for damage that you didn't cause. In terms of cleanliness, I would say that the halls are average. There are cleaning teams cleaning hallways and kitchens on a weekly basis, but I would not consider the building to be very clean. In addition to that, my room was home to a lot of silverfish, but that can easily be fixed with lavender oil or insect traps. The staff was always nice and helpful to an extent - they sometimes take a lot longer to fix any issues than they say they will. In addition to that, they charge you for any damage of the flat in the end of the year, so again, make sure to document the state of the room when you first move in.
