University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I’ve enjoyed it so far, it’s a little overwhelming and I’ve still got a lot of stuff I need to figure out (like shopping, assessments, blackboard) but I’m getting there I think
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Shops, the hub, faith centres, cafes- all really useful and convenient. Can’t count how many times I’ve been to the hub for help. The shops and cafes can be a little pricey but not that bad and I like the focus on reduced waste and looking after the environment- they really listen to what the students want.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Tutors are very open and encouraging and always advertising their office hours for you to get involved. My school also has the AMA corridor where students can go to study and because it’s just outside all the tutors offices they are there for help and support when you do go and will offer it when passing by.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
A lot of facilities for student, with a lot of attention toward wellbeing and mental health which is really important. The SU is really active and offer so many opportunities and support for students, it’s really useful.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
It’s an hour walk to the city centre and half an hour to get to Aldi (the nearest supermarket) so it’s not the best but there is a bus that goes all the way through campus and goes into the centre so (when you can afford it) it’s nice to go out for the day into the city centre, which has so much stuff to do, restaurants, shops, a cinema, museum, etc
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Over 200 societies and a very active student union so you really can’t complain. Not really into sports but I know there’s a new ish sports park (although I’m told it’s a little pricey) and lots of sports club/societies so the opportunities are definitely there.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I really enjoy my seminars as they involve a lot of group discussions which really engage with learning, and even when you don’t think you’ll have much to say you always find yourself participating and really interested in what’s going on. It can be a little unclear though on assessments (dates, tasks). Something I found a little unnerving as well was in my American studies module we don’t have a formative assessment, our first assessment counts towards 40% of our grade, having never done something like it before I think it would be beneficial to have a practice run before the real thing.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
7
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Theres a careers center and they run lots of workshops and events throughout the year, like career fairs and CV workshops. I went to a session on starting out in publishing and it was really informative and gave us a lot of pointers on getting into the industry so I definitely plan on attending more.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Security is really good, so I feel really safe at me accommodation. Location is a little far from the city centre and supermarkets so thank god for ASDA delivery . I’m happy with the cost of my accommodation- I pay less but share a room and bathroom with one other person but we get on well so I’m happy with how it turned out. Our cleaner is nice and I love when I wake up to the kitchen all clean. My room is only 2 years old so it’s nice, the kitchen however is a little lacking in space and storage so I have to keep much of my stuff in my room.
