OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Brought me right out of my shell, it's obviously where I'm meant to be. The amount of hands on experience is phenomenal and there are so many ways to get involved, it's fantastic. Everyone is outgoing and there's something for everyone, with more support and possibilities for students than I've seen from anywhere else.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
They teach you research methods, there are many practical lessons, I've had far more hands on experience with animals than any of my friends at similar courses in other unis, the placement in 3rd year will be invaluable and in my first term they've already taught me how to write a CV and cover letter, and there are many farm skills courses for people who haven't grown up in agriculture to prepare them for work.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
They're always available and offer many extra sessions, they have many experienced lectures to teach different areas of the same modules to make sure that the students learn as best they can for each area.
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
It's absolutely excellent, the student union organise many brilliant events throughout the term and are constantly taking feedback from the students on what they want to see, the SU bar nights are the social hilight of the week and I'm eager to get on the SU team next year.
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Very friendly, rooms are an excellent size with regular cleaning staff to clean public areas daily and your rooms every other day. Full cooked breakfast every weekday morning, as well as a cooked lunch and dinner, they take care of you very well.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
They're expanding the labs right now, but above and beyond any other uni my friends are going to is the university farm surrounding the campus that students can get experience on, as well as comfortable lecture theatres and rooms for extracurricular activities like a dance studio.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
There's one club in Newport, with a free shuttle bus service running to and from the Uni on club nights, and because there's only one club you always know where the action's going to be, plus there's a few bars to pre drink at.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Mostly sport but it's been expanded this year so far, with many sports available beyond just the usual football rugby and rowing, and the new head of clubs and societies is doing a great job of encouraging new clubs and societies to get started. The LGBT+ society has been started up properly this year, and it's very easy for someone to start up a new club if something isn't available. The SU funding to clubs and societies helps in getting started, and some throw huge balls which have become a staple of the social calendar (Harper Ireland and the Paddy's Ball).
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
There's a big focus on mental health this year, and councillors are available, as well as duty wardens and wardens in charge of each halls of residence. The lecturers are always available with sign up sheets on their doors so they can be contacted to help you if you're struggling. If you need to miss a lecture all the lecture slides and additional materials are all put up online, and they can organise for you to be put in other lab classes or tutorials if you have to miss a session.
