Strathclyde University is right at the heart of Glasgow, so it’s easy to walk down to the high street before or after your classes to get a quick snack (I personally recommend Oaka’s pork buns - I get those after almost every class - or the MooBoo bubble tea). Also, the student Union is really cool. They have a bar, lots of places to get food, really fun event nights (drag bingo, for example, was amazing to see) and good society scouting opportunities. I meet up with my friends there all the time for pre-drinks and sometimes a little show. I’ve met lots of nice people in my classes, and generally the teachers I have are quite approachable, so I don’t think twice when I have a question to ask. The workload hasn’t been too bad either. As a student coming in from England, settling in wasn’t difficult for me. Everybody was really easy to understand and you get used to navigating the city eventually. Plus, the Strathclyde app has a campus map that you can use, which really helped with getting to my classes. Overall, I like this place a lot :)

I do BA Hons Humanities and Social Sciences (specifically Spanish and Marketing), which basically allows you to do a joint degree in whatever you’d like. I think pros are being able to do more than one degree in what feels like one package. I’m quite indecisive so I couldn’t choose between Spanish and marketing, so having the opportunity to do both was a blessing in disguise. Also, because they’re technically two different subjects, you get to make your own timetable (apart from maybe 1 or 2 classes that have their own set time). This allowed me to make sure that I chose as many afternoon classes as possible when I signed up for tutorials and lectures, because I absolutely am not a morning person. I say the cons are the electives. Having to buy a book for, study for and attend lectures and tutorials for a subject you know you won’t use in the future and are going to drop in a couple months time is really demotivating. Especially if that particular subject you’ve chosen as an elective is difficult or has a high workload.

I’m a black British student from England coming to Glasgow and - although there aren’t many black people at all - there are still plenty of opportunities to meet new people in general. There’s plenty of really cool clubs (my favourites so far are Garage, Bamboo and Kokomo) that are very uni student friendly, with club nights ranging from bouncy castles to drinks that cost £1. The music they play in the clubs I like are really hype and everybody is really high energy, it’s invigorating. I like the food here as well. Down where I used to live in England, there wasn’t much apart from fast food, but here there’s a lot of Asian restaurants and shops. I tried teriyaki chicken for the first time, tikka masala, char siu bao and more - and I loved all of them. Although some restaurants are expensive, there are places like Mikaku that have really good pricing. Also, Glasgow is a very walkable city. There’s public transport yes - and inner city train and plenty of bus stops to boot - but you could very easily walk your way to anywhere you’d need to be without breaking a sweat. The shops look quite aesthetic and when you walk down the main high street you’ll often hear people singing or playing instruments or you’ll see street performers everywhere. All in all, it’s a really fun place to be!
