University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I attended the Cornwall campus of the University of Exeter and it was absolutely fantastic.Being a shared campus between Exeter and Falmouth made the mixture of people at the university really varied and gave the whole place quite a relaxed and arty feel which makes it a really unique place compared to purely academic institutions
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Being a slightly smaller campus than most, the facilities weren't as swish as some unis ive seen, but being so close to the sea was the best facility you could hope for. For instance, the campus doesn't have a swimming pool. However, the swimming society take a minibus to one of the closest large pools 3 times a week and who needs a chlorinated pool when you've got the whole sea to swim in! - the sports you can do are incredible and having the backdrop of the coastline makes them second to none.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The student support team is fantastic as its quite a small uni so its never too overrun. f people are going through a tough time or need some extra support, there is so much the uni willdo to try and help you.The student satisfaction at this campus is the highest in the whole of the UK and i'm not surprised. Streatham campus students think of the cornwall campus as the weird little brother stuck out somewhere at the end of the country, when you flip that around and ask a cornwall campus student if they enjoyed their time there, they honestly couldn't have done anything to make it better - and we're proud of it!
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
FXU is the Falmouth and Exeter union and couldn't have been better - there were so many activities, sports, societies and trips to choose from. Some people disliked the student union bar, which is fair enough as it is quite small, but the actual union were always putting on events and the people who run it are so friendly and accessible and make an effort to get to know everyone and join in - it wasn't just run by the most popular people, but those who actually wanted to be really beneficial to the universities and work together.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Falmouth and Penryn are not cities, not even close. If you want a huge city experience, its not the campus for you. However, if you want some incredible nights out bumping into all of your friends, absolutely great selection of pubs (one of them has a bookshop in the pub), great restaurants, some brilliant live music every night of the week, amazing quirky film showings at a beautiful old cinema, loads of art and festivals, oh and parties on the beach with bbqs and bonfires and lots and lots of dancing and swimming - this campus is DEFINITELY the place to go!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There was such a range its difficult to choose what you can fit in when you first arrive. I spent all of my first year having the most incredible time running around trying to be a part of every single club or society that I liked the look of - turns out there were so many I didn't have enough hours in the day! Definitely get into some sort of sea based activity of whichthere are loads! Why not give gig rowing a go, play ultimate frizbee on the beach, learn how to sail or paddleboard or kayak. There is SO much to do there that the uni does have all the usual sports and societies but equally some really cool other ones. Plus, if it doesn't have the one you want - they give you support to start it!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
At the Cornwall Campus, the lecturers were so accessible at all times and knew everyone by name as the campus is smaller and so class sizes were also smaller. They were all exceedingly friendly and you got to know them a bit personally too. There is an open door policy too which massively helped when you were stuck on a piece of work!
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
I managed to land myself an almost perfect job, 6 months before I'd even graduated and started in the June of my final year. I've now been in the company just over 6 months and have just been promoted.
