I have now finished university at Ulster University, Magee.
Overall I found my 4 year experience to be a very worthwhile one. Yes there were serious times where I was extremely stressed, but I got through it. This will be the same for all universities, not just Ulster University. I highly recommend Magee and especially the Renewable Energy Engineering course I was studying. I now have a job secured related to my degree and work experience.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The Ulster University Magee campus facilities makes the most of the very limited space it has. The facilities provided are improving and increasing, so hopefully this continues in the future. The campus is constantly being improved (with limited student disruption as the students come first) and extended. There is even proof of this as the new teaching facilities show and a large amount of land has recently been bought for more student/research facilities.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Academic - see previous answers
Personal:
One thing I will say is that the university will not know that you are going through a problem unless you mention it to someone e.g. course director/counsellor. Once the problem is mentioned and these people know of the problem, they will attempt to assist and help you in anyway possible so that you get the best out of your degree. Don't be afraid to speak up as the staff at Magee are extremely helpful and I believe they are trained well in personal areas.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Good points:
Since the new vice-president on Magee was appointed in my 3rd year I have seen a dramatic improvement of the overall campus and the support from the students union. During exam season the S.U. would organise a range of stress relief events, free refreshments etc. This is a small but nice touch. There are also various clubs that can be joined, really something for everyone, so don't be afraid to give them a go.
I haven't been greatly involved as my course required a lot of time for studying and preparing. However, if I had more time then I would definitely have given it a go.
Bad points:
The café and shop can be quite expensive... shouldn't it be cheaper as its students?
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The Magee campus is based in the centre of Derry City. Derry is a very lively city at the weekends. During the week it can be quiet, however there are nightlife promotions for students on different nights.
- Great city
- Friendly people
- Not expensive, good pricing
- Brilliant history
- Everything is within a 20 minute walk from the university, no matter what it is
- Quiet during the week, but can be busy at the weekends
I have grown up in Derry and overall I find it a great City to live in. Yes there are some minor faults (just like there is to every City) but it is a great location.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are a small amount of clubs in the Magee Campus (approximately 10-15), however these clubs are very popular and suit a good variety of people. There are also other clubs on other campuses that can be attended.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Most:
- I have definitely seen an improvement over the years at Ulster University, Magee. A new teaching block was built at Magee and it is fantastic for teaching. One of my final year group project modules was held here and the facilities couldn't be faulted.
- The lecturers genuinely care about the students, they don't just see it as a paycheck at the end of the day. Also, you will never be put down for asking questions. My class was only about 30 people (much better than other universities of 100s), therefore I was able to constantly ask questions without feeling nervous to do so. Due to the fact that other students wanted to learn and the lecturers were understanding.
- A teaching technique that was used by a lecturer in my 2nd year was the use of video tutorials from himself showing how to solve a question. This was a fantastic resource. I really hope that this is used further throughout the course.
Least:
- In my final year there were some lecturers who were very nice, however their teaching could have been slightly improved. This was only from minor things e.g. very long powerpoints, not making a clear understanding of assignments and not providing mark schemes. They issues were raised during module feedback, so these issues should be improved in the following years.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
16
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Absolute maximum effort:
- I have talked to the careers department about an interview I had for a graduate job and they couldn't have been more helpful, I ended up getting the job then.
- Careers fair have definitely improved over the years. Always something to match your degree.
- My placement took place in 3rd year. The preparation and support from the university for placement during 2nd year was good. I am aware from other students that it has improved even more now.
- The skills I have achieved throughout university are definitely useful in the workplace. Not so much 1st year as this is just a ice breaking year to give you an understanding of what you are getting into. However, with 2nd year and final year the skills and knowledge gained are great.
I studied at the Magee Campus. Overall the lecturers are very supportive - don't be afraid to approach them as they will do their very best to help out! Of course in all universities there will be faults, but Magee does make the most of the facilities it has to offer.
