OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
University has been the best (until now) years of my life. I am entering my final year grateful for the previous two, and excited for the next one to come. I have met some amazing people, made friends for a lifetime, learned a lot about myself and what I can accomplish if I set my mind to it, expanded my intellectual abilities and learned so much through my degree, got given opportunities that I would not have had otherwise, and overall developed a new view on the world. I recommend everyone who is thinking about university and who think it will do good for what they want to do in the future, to go. It has definitely made me a better person, and the experiences I've had here will join me for the rest of my life.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
My department hosts a range of activities you can participate in to increase employability: crisis games, research groups, involvement in different institutes etc. The university has a good careers department offering everything you can think of when it comes to career development. We have the opportunity to attend a work placement between our second and third year.
I wish it was easier to do shorter placements as part of, or during, your degree as that is mostly what is offered in international politics/relation.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Passion, that they care, the range of interesting subjects, that they are always available, that you dont feel the authority of a lecturer - they can be equals to you and enjoy having a debate
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I think our students union is good, they provide good advice and have a large range of services we can make use of
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I currently live in a private flat in the centre of town, and it's great. It really feels like a home, my flatmates are amazing and I have all the facilities Aberystwyth has to offer right on my doorstep. It's a three bed apartment with a bathroom, kitchen and livingroom. The builiding is a bit old, and do need a refurbishment.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Most of the university facilities do need an upgrade as they are starting to get a bit old and run down.
Our library is really really good, and always listen to the needs of the students by actively upgrading, adding and improving according to feedback
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The city life in Aber is like living in a bubble. Compared to other places like London or Manchester, it is bad. However, it has its own charm, and you fall in love with the people, the atmosphere and the quirkyness. No matter how bad it might be, the nights out in Aber will be the best ones you have, as they are never the same.
The general city life is good. Everyone is really friendly, we have a lot of good services for it being such a small place, and you do have everything you need.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
We have every club and society you could think of, and they are all very open to new people. The people and students of Aberystwyth are the friendliest on earth, and that is reflected in the societies and clubs. Joining a society or club is not just becoming part of a great group of people who share the same passion or interest as you, it's joining a family, it's making friends for life, it's creating the memories that really make the university experience, and it's trying something you would never think of.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I have not yet seeked the support offered by the uni, but my impression is that it is really good.
