Fairly well organised as a university, and an excellent physics department in terms of research, but the teaching was often sub-par. With a few exceptions, particularly from the theory department, courses were often poorly taught and standard in content. The theoretical units were lacking until final year, but well taught. Should be more foundational units and mathematical units instead of the dull and poorly taught applied units that are pretty much useless (cf. Nuclear and Particle Physics 2rd year course). Good facilities, constant renovations, beautiful libraries and helpful admins give me a good impression of the university as a whole, although my experience of teaching in the physics department has been sub-par, hence the 4 stars.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Very good library and computer facilities situated throughout the university. A shame some of them are locked off via U-card access.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The physics department admins are absolutely fantastic, supportive and helpful, whatever your query (even if it's a silly one...).
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Never have any need to go there, not much happens there that I hear of apart from exams. Nice renovation, but do more stuff there!
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
A few decent clubs and a fairly active night scene. Plenty of kebab places open till ridiculous o'clock in the morning. Really cool city in terms of museums and activities and whatnot. We even had a huge water slide all the way down Park Street one day, which was great fun to go to although only a few people got to go down.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I am not currently participating in any societies, but I did in previous years and they were in general very good. I know of others that are very active in the student societies, but I just don't think it's for me personally.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
See overall rating comment. Essentially, the courses were often dull and unimportant, leaving out important foundational courses taught at other unis. Often very badly taught also, with a few exceptions in the theory, solid state physics and astrophysics departments.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Well respected uni that people recognise and associate with high performers.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Good for uni accommodation, although expensive (Bristol is an expensive city). Lots of activities, and very close to the city centre. Awful food but hey, that kind of comes with the territory. Good overall impression of the university accommodation.
