University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I'm nearing the end of my University career, and while it's had its ups and downs, I wouldn't have changed my experience for the world. I love living in Glasgow, I love the friends I've made throughout the years, and I truly feel I've grown academically and personally. I'll always have fond memories of this wonderful place, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone considering applying for a course here.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The science department is pretty well equipped with technology to carry out research (imaging facilities, microscopes etc), and there are a large number of good quality computers for student use.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Feedback can vary between general and applicable to the whole class and comments aimed at personal development - it could probably be improved, but considering the large number of students and slight lack of staff, it is understandable.
Support from the Uni has been incredible for several of my friends who've had tough times in the past few years for various reasons. the University has been incredibly helpful in these people picking themselves back up and getting back on the right track - whether they need counselling for home problems that are interfering with studies, financial issues, or difficulty keeping up with the workload.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
There are two student unions which is great because it broadens the number of opportunities that students have to get involved with. Pretty much everyone has gotten involved with the Unions at some point, whether it be for nights out, drinking, gigs, places to eat, or events like Daft Friday.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The city life is hands down the best aspect of being a student at Glasgow. It is close knit, with the West End being almost overrun with amazing places to eat and relax - clubs, bars and pubs are everywhere, and there is pretty much always something going on to get involved with. I wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere else for my Undergrad, largely because of the city life!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There's a huge number of clubs/societies to get involved with, as well as the opportunity to set up your own. Definitely not lacking in this regard!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I like the relatively small class size (40 people compared to several hundred in the first two years), which means that I've had the opportunity to get to know my classmates better. The opportunity to get involved with new things such as bioimaging and animal work in fourth year which was not possible before is also a great addition. I find there to be a good balance between coursework, lab-work and research-based learning for written exams.
Unfortunately there are too few lecturers for the number of students - this is not necessarily the case for other subjects, and I believe the University is aware of the situation and will try to mediate it. It would be incredibly beneficial for everyone if there were more lecturers/supervisors, as there would be a greater scope for the type and quality of work that we do.

Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
We get regular emails about potential internships or placements, in the UK and abroad, that may be relevant to us. There are opportunities every year to get involved with CV-writing workshops. It's largely up to us to get involved with what we think will be useful for our own careers, but the options are there if we want them.
