University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
University so far has been incredible. Would recommend university, especially Lancaster, to anybody considering it. Can not fault my first year experience.
You will make some of the best memories here, and the oportunities available to you can set you up for life after uni.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Sports Centre - very good.
Library - open 24/h can not fault it.
Accommodation - wide variety to suit all needs, very good.
Great services on campus, including laundrette, university owned housing company etc.
Overall, very pleased with university facilities
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Yes there is a wide range of support available. Particular to my course, there are development programmes for maths, or writing and studying technique courses for scientific reports and essay writing. There is always help available, even if you are not sure where to go, you can always drop into the students union for advice or email college officers who are also there to guide you.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Students union is not as large as other universities and tend to have a smaller presence here. However, we do get regular emails and updates from the students union keeping us up to date on what is going on at uni which is very useful.
Personally, I am probably not too involved directly with the students union because I participate in many extra curriculars, and with a high level of contact hours, there is just not enough time. I do hvae indirect involvement and tend to know a lot of what is going on as I know individuals who have ran, or are part of the SU.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Lancaster as a city is relatively small, however there is a real community feel here. There are generally many events on within the town centre, and I think that it really promotes a strong commmunity.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
The clubs and societies offered are amazing. There is a wide variety on offer, as well as oportunities within the clubs to gain transferrable skills such as running for roles such as president, or treasurer of a society. They are a key part to university life and are where I have made some of my closest friends.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Most: The practical learning - can put the skills and knowledge that we are learning about in the lectures to actual work in the field.
Least: End of module tests. Can have up to 6 in one week and results in not an accurate representation of scores. Would prefer either a greater percentage of coursework or greater percentage on exams rather than a progress test.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
29
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Uni has links with Target Connect; a career-based service which has a lot of information and courses asscoiated wiht developing transferrable skills, alongside promoting available jobs for a variety of different sectors, alongside placements and year in industry programmes . It is a very good and useful system to have.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Great halls. Any maintenace issues reported usually fixed the same day, if not within a couple of hours. Porters open 24/7 for emergencies which is extremely useful. Cleaning staff are amazing. All round good experience.
