University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I have felt at home since stepping foot onto campus. As a mature student getting back into education I have felt massively supported. The University have been extremely approachable in helping me financially and accommodating my needs. I feel the University is approachable and open to change as they continually strive to improve through student feedback. I think Swansea University and all its staff deserve recognition as they have helped me change my life and I will be eternally grateful Thank you Swansea
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The Midwifery teaching facilities are dated in comparison to the other Welsh Universities. I believe they deserve the financial input to improve their facilities to include better clinical skills equipment and access to specialised books. Our time within the classroom is very valuable and it would be easier to access midwifery literature within our own block and to have a hospital style clinical suite to practice clinical skill simulation.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I felt extremely supported. I accessed the Money advice service and new of numerous workshops to help me with essay skills and numerical skills. The occupational health team were extremely approachable and supportive. I also had access to emotional support and meditation which I found great.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
I had a lot of involvement with the Student Union as the founding member of the new Student Midwifery Society at Swansea. The staff there were really helpful although the change over in staff was frequent which meant I would have to create new working relationships on a regular basis. The Midwifery programme is run in a unique way at Swansea and I would have liked the student union to be more flexible in the way in supports the society with regards to elections and the memberships within the computer system.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
I love the area that Swansea in set. The sea views make it an extremely pleasing place to be with the city only a stones throw. I know many of the younger student midwives have enjoyed some of the social aspects of Swansea University
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I found the areas used for the societies and clubs quite dated and in need of modernisation although as a Midwifery Student my experience was based elsewhere on campus. I do feel that the opportunities that are available for students to get involved with societies and clubs is amazing.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The Midwifery lecturing team have been amazing. I feel that they are a close knit family and take every student into their fold. I feel they have supported my every step, academically, emotionally and within my clinical practice. I feel very fortunate to be a Swansea Student and to have met such inspirational life teachers.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
My job prospects will continue to be difficult due to the competition for Midwifery Jobs within the training health board. The Midwifery lecturing team have made tremendous effort to ensure I am prepared to apply for jobs and feel confident going for an interview. I have always been supported to embark on extra curricular activities to increase me employability and so feel that although difficult, my job prospects are promising.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I cannot comment on accommodation as I am a mature student living at home and travelling to campus.
