University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I chose UEA for its atmosphere. It's a fantastic place to live and learn, alongside its great standing in student satisfaction, graduate prospects and university rankings.
There's a good range of students there, and lots places to go. The campus is really safe, as is the whole of Norwich, and along with a great town centre, it's got a lot of culture to fill up your time, too.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The library is open 24hrs and has a vast collection. There's several IT suites on campus, and study rooms (group and single), so lots of space to study.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
There's financial support with emergency funds, educational support through the Dean and also emotional support with free counselling (various counsellors for different problems)
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
UEA has a club on campus, which is cheap and great for a night out. The Nick Rayns LCR has weekly club nights (with 2 music zones) and also weekly fancy dress nights, and on other nights attracts great bands, artists, comedians etc. which are always reasonably priced for whoever you go to see.
There is also a large bar, pool tables, snooker tables and a cafe all in the same building.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
It's not London, but it's got every shop you'd need, as well as great bus links in/out of uni, fixed taxi fares and frequent trains to/from London and Peterborough.
The night life is great and there's clubs for every music taste.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
As the saying at UEA goes, "you name it, we've got a society" - knitting, LARP and circus included.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Lecturers at UEA are a great mix of age, culture and specialism, no matter which subject you're studying. You are provided with a huge choice of modules as a result, and can specialise or get great variation as you please.
Almost every course allows you to study outside your main subject, too, in later years, so you can get some knowledge in other fields.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
UEA holds a careers fair every year, which gets a lot of local businesses (large and small) visiting, as well as ones from outside Norfolk. There's a focus on insurance and accounting, due to Aviva, Marsh and PwC being based locally, but UEA manages to get a good mix of representatives from other industries also.
UEA may not be Oxbridge, but it's a well-recognised institution and employers are happy to see it on your CV!
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Cheap and great quality accommodation. There's a vast range of prices - living slightly off campus (5-10 minute walk) is a little cheaper than living on campus.
There's several layouts of flats, and shared rooms of 2, shared rooms within a larger flat, ensuite and non-ensuite rooms.
