University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I love the world class facilities, the student support, and most of all the numerous friends from all over the world who have so enriched my life greatly indeed
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
TOP-NOTCH. WORLD CLASS. UNBEATABLE.
I am a law student, and I definitely have a bias for our moot court which is a work of legal art, to put it most plainly. But no matter what one is studying, the university ensures it always has the best possible facilties to ensure one's student experience is the best it can quite possibly be. The aircraft hangar, the Alfred Russell building for physical science students, the business school with its own lounge, the arts department, (which could well be a national monument), THE SPORTS PARK! Comprising of ELEVEN FIFA-standard football pitches, etc. Every facility is a sign and a wonder.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Excellent. The University ranks 9th in the UK for student support, so that alone speaks for itself. Tutors are always ready to challenge and support students. Pastoral support is also not neglected and asides those offered by personal tutors, there are also mental health and wellbeing counsellors, and chaplains who are available 24/7 to speak with students and counsel them.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
It's fantastic in the way it puts students first and ensures that there is always something going on that is at once beneficial and entertaining for the students. There is also a highly respected open door policy and student reps always make sure they answer every question, no matter how (seemingly) dumb. There is a respect for individuality and diversity and there are always considerations for students who share a broad range of values.
It's also 100% student-run and everyone somehow gets to take part in defining what we want our students' union to look like.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The Campus I'm on is located in a modern village called Treforest which is idyllic with its beautiful terraced houses, bridges, and open green spaces. Other campus exist across South Wales, in Gyntaff, Newport and Cardiff, each with its own character. Cardiff is a truly beautiful european city and it's very acessible from any location. The joy of being a student at the University of South Wales is that you get to experience the best of both country and city living.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Numerous, Inclusive and considerate about academic commitments. There is a club for everyone. Maths clubs, Language exchange clubs, sports, dance, drama, music, trampoline and even bird lovers have a club to themselves! How amazing.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
MOST: They are taught with a focus on individual learning. They do not try to impose opinions on students but rather, are a source of guidance for further research.
LEAST: This is honestly hard as there's everything to love about lectures at my university. Just because I have to say something, a particular lecturer sometimes speeds through his lectures. But that's only because there is so much to cover on such a short space of time, and he does try his best, really.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The University has a strong emphasis on developing the employability potential of each student, so every course has a work placement module included. Lecturers are often people who have had experiences working professionally in their subject areas, and they teach a way that refelects this, which is very useful for the students. The school also runs an excellent careers service, which is free for all students and guides them through considerations in choosing a career, invites relevant guest speakers in students' chosen fields regularly, and organises tailor made individual sessions for students.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
It's a very well structured system of flats, all ensuite, and self-catered. The accommodation services staff are very efficient and proactive. The flats are not very big, asides studio flats, but they do contain enough room for basically everything one needs. The bills (Internet, Water, Electricity and heating) are all subsumed within the accommodation fees and these services run contantly without fail. Security is also ensured by the provison of personalised key cards, and guests, no matter how familiar are made to go through essential checks in order to safeguard the students. There are also campus life coordinators who are excellent in organising social events and getting the students out of their rooms, basically just ensuring we have the best time possible, living in halls.
