Having life in sheffield and really enjoy my course helpful and useful tutors and very friendly and very interesting!! The accommodation at the university of sheffield is a lovely place.

A lovely place but over-priced

I did my undergrad here in Sheffield and could not bear to leave after 4 years… so now I’m doing my MA here! I love the city itself and how close it is to the Peak District. There’s so much to do but it still feels like a comfortable size and isn’t too overwhelming at all. The SU is great - fab nights out, a good quiz and great student bars. As for the studying aspect, Ive always felt supported and motivated by tutors and lecturers. Changes made to the languages department over recent years are such a shame and I’m not sure that student (and departmental staff) opinion was valued during this decision making process.

For the most part, lecturers are passionate, approachable and very knowledgable in their subject areas. My contact hours average at about 12-14 each week which doesn’t feel like a lot. It’d be nice to have more hours doing actual translation as opposed to such a big focus on theory.

So much to do! Pubs, bars, cafés, restaurants, shopping (Meadowhall - city centre shopping isn’t great). But also so much nature and culture with the museums and Peak District and parks!

I lived in Ranmoor 2018-19 in my first year of undergrad and had a good experience. It’s quite out of the way and requires a 25-35 min walk to get to uni which isn’t ideal but as most people are this far out it isn’t really much of an issue. The flat itself felt a little outdated but it did the job.
