Sunderland university offers a wide range of programmes and courses, which I personally found to help me further explore possible interests and to help find the right fit for the future. Along side this, i appreciated the extensive variety of integrated foundation years available, as this can make university education more accessible to a wider range of students with greater flexibility. I also like how there is a lot of general diversity throughout the whole university and the emphasis of inclusion - including the amount of mental health resources/support available. I do, however, wish there was an improvement to the trips planned with the student union. For example, providing trips to nicer places such as London etc.

Majority of the course so far has been spent online with a lot of independent work outside of classroom hours. However, there has been regular in classroom lessons and contact hours with lectures for the maths/chemistry side of my course. For the biology side, the contact with the lecturer is pretty rare. When work has been set (for the biology side) some instructions are quite vague and I personally feel like I’ve been at a slight disadvantage because of this, specifically as I didn’t take any science based A-levels so a lot of the concepts are new to me. With regards to receiving feedback, it has been very clear with the maths/study skills part of the course as it is easily accessible (via canvas). However, for the biology/chemistry there isn’t any specific feedback based on that specific individual which i don’t like as it limits my understanding/ability to improve in the future. I have to specifically email for feedback and even then it isn’t tailored towards my work.

Best experience of studying at Sunderland would be the support and help provided to help me through my journey. As for the downfall, I’d say the campus should be more lively outside.

Course is well taught and lecture materials are available online. Staff are always supportive and knowledgeable! Though some contact times may not be quick enough, it’s understandable as they have other students.
