Amazing facilities. There are 3 campuses around the city so there are plenty of study spaces and places to eat. Furthermore, if you're a first year living in accommodation, traveling by bus is free and accessible with the unilink bus service! It's really convenient whenever I want to travel multiple times a day or whenever I want to go home between classes to grab my lunch. Speaking of accommodation, Wessex Lane is an amazing place to live. There are plenty of storage spaces in your own room and it comes with a corkboard and shelving. Furthermore, there's always something going on in the common area such as movie nights or mug painting. I also love that we get free laundry. The student's union is also great with how many events they organise every week. There are a multitude of socities to join so you're guaranteed to find something you like whether it's for academic reasons or for yourself. They also arrange weekly veg&fruit markets on Highfield which I'm glad for. Therefore there's an overall lack of criticism I have for University of Southampton. However, I have a very slight issue which is specific to my area of study alone: Law. I knew taking Law would come with lots of prereading but it feels sort of overwhelming. Sometimes, some lecturers or tutors will assign a chapter of reading which is fine to an extent but others may assign multiple chapters with a multitude of subsections which feels impossible to complete. Some of the essential reading may even feel irrelevant to the tutorial. Overall, I am extremely happy to be able to study here at the University of Southampton - even if the reading required tires me out sometimes.

Firstly, I'd like to stress that I took Law at A level so my perspective may be different to someone who didn't take Law at A level. So far, everything has been manageable and understandable as we are mostly covering content I've already covered in college. Even the content I haven't fully covered are somewhat easy to understand. However, that being said, the course and the way it's taught by lecturers does not feel very beginner friendly. Of course, it's a given that you will struggle when you first begin university and that you can ask your tutors and lecturers questions or consult the textbooks for clarification, but sometimes the language that the lecturers use is not understandable for someone who has never taken Law before. The same can be said for textbooks which are hard to navigate and harder to fully take in if you're trying to read them for your tutorials. For example, for my first few lectures, the lecturers already spoke as if they had expected us to know how the legal system operates such as knowing what an appeal is, what the different courts mean or what "R V..." actually meant. If you had taken Law before, those would be basic knowledge to you, but if you hadn't, they wouldn't mean anything. Furthermore, sometimes lecture rooms do not fit everyone in the course. Sometimes this is not an issue as people are absent sometimes but if everyone in the course would attend their lectures, not everyone would fit in most of them. The school has tried to remedy this by livestreaming and recording the lectures and booking a separate room to fit more people but every lecture I've attended has a wifi issue so whether the livestream works or not is unknown. On the other hand, I am absolutely greatful for the subject facilities. Firstly, most of our textbooks are online and free - the school has invested a large amount of money into law databases so we can access, highlight and bookmark textbooks online so no need to spend thousands on any physical books (apart from maybe £4 for one Rule of Law book). Secondly, if you do want a physical book, you can find them at Hartley Library with the help of the librarians or search up how to find them on Blackboard (which can be accessed online or through the school's own app).

Great value for money. Living in Wessex Halls gives you access to free bus travel using the unilink bus, free laundry and access to the common area (the Boiler House) where events are held frequently. It's also a 20 minute walk from campus which is convenient when there's too much traffic for the buses. There's really no issue about living here apart from maybe when people don't take out their washing as soon as it's done.
