University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I am in my last year of university and so far it has genuinely been the best experience - I have made friends for life, I have been given support unlike I was previously in my education, and I have been made to feel very welcome.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
In general the facilities are good, we have many study spaces which are all fully equipped with what we would need. Some of the buildings were supposed to be temporary buildings in the 80s and we are still being taught in them - the classrooms are find some students and lecturers are just worried about safety.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Academic feedback is 50/50 - some tutors are excellent and will give you really detailed feedback and will be there for you to support you, but others will just point out what you did wrong and leave you to it, and I think this could be improved. The personal support offered by the uni is good, the counselling and support and student guidance tutors and very helpful
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
There have been a few issues within our Student Union recently, and a lot of students feel like they could be doing a better job of representing their students and asking what we would like. The facilities, however, are excellent, we have many student cafes / restaurants which are really good quality, and our study spaces are good to work in.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
My university has four campuses and the campus that I study at is quite out of the way of the town centre and anything else really - it’s very much hidden and surrounded by countryside. Although it is in a nice location and we can take walks through the fields and woods that are behind the campus, it takes longer to get to than the other campuses in the city, and there aren’t really any shops around it except for a local farm shop, which doesn’t sell things many students would be after, especially for a day at uni.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
I think the variety of societies and sports at my university is really good - I wouldn’t even know the number of societies and sports teams we have because the number is so large. The range is also great as students have the option to start our own society, meaning that there really is something for everyone.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The thing I like most about the way my course is taught is that some of my lecturers are very passionate about the modules they are teaching, and because you can feel this through their teaching methods, you feel more inclined to want to learn, and the lecturers are more engaging because of it. The thing I like least about the way my course is taught is that some lecturers very clearly do not care about what they are teaching, they do not fill the whole lecture time and often, when we ask questions, we do not get given answers, just replies that make us feel belittled.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
9
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
My university does have a careers service, which assumably would try and help to increase student’s employability, however I feel like not a lot of students know about the careers service, and the ones that do don’t make much of an effort to access it as the service don’t make themselves very known.
