University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I have loved every minute of it. I was lucky enough to choose a course which I have enjoyed, which sadly a lot of people do not. But aside from the course itself, my whole experience at university has been just incredible. I couldn't have picked a better place to come. The university has such a lovely atmosphere, the people are great, the city itself is just a wonderful place to be living and studying, and I absolutely could not speak higher of my time at Glasgow Uni. I'll be very sad when it all comes to an end.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Fantastic. The library can get super busy around exam time and it can be impossible to find a seat or a computer, but apart from that, I've always been thoroughly impressed with our facilities here. The sporting facilities in particular are incredible.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I'd say it's pretty good. University is different than school, in that support won't always be offered directly to you, but rather you need to find it yourself. I've been lucky enough that I've never needed any serious support from the University, but I am well aware that there's not much in regards to mental health. I think this is something which is improving and is being worked on, but I know that this is something which they are definitely slacking on.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
We have two at the University of Glasgow and they're both great. There's always events on and there's something for everyone. I don't get too involved in any of the events because I have a lot of other stuff going on, but in the past I've really enjoyed anything that I've been to at the Unions. They have a great vibe and are really popular amongst the students here.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
The city life in Glasgow is just the best. The University is over in the West End which is a beautiful part of Glasgow. There's loads of fun and quirky things to do, lots of independent little cafes and lovely restaurants. Everything you need is in the West End and it's a lovely place to live and study. You're only a 30 minute walk or a quick subway ride into town where everything is going on. The shopping is great, the nightlife is fantastic and the people of Glasgow are unforgettable. I couldn't have picked a better city to study and live in.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There is an absolutely ridiculous amount of clubs and societies at Glasgow. You name it, there's a club for it! I've been involved in a few and have always enjoyed them and been very impressed with how well they are run.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The best thing about my course is the compulsory stay abroad, because I think that spending time during your university career in another country either studying or working is an absolutely fantastic opportunity and should be encouraged in all courses.
The best thing about my lecturers is that they're all very passionate about languages and culture, and some of them are native speakers which is obviously great.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There are always a load of career development workshops on, and there's a fantastic Internship Hub at Glasgow University through which I actually did a great internship last summer. The options to study or work abroad are also great and there's a lot of support to do this.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I am now in my second last year of uni, and live in a private studio apartment. I lived in university halls in first year and in a shared flat in 2nd year.
