OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I'm so glad I decided to study at Swansea as my experience has been amazing. The lecturers are extremely helpful, very knowledgeable and are always happy to help. I've had many opportunities such as participating in dance shows and winning a scholarship to study in Germany for a month, giving me an idea of what my year abroad will be like. The city has many things to offer from shopping to a night out, from going to a football or rugby match to spending time relaxing by the sea on the gorgeous beach at Swansea Bay. There are many jobs that students can do part time which balances well with their full time studies.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
The university has a dedicated employability office who organise events throughout the year such as careers fairs, CV writing shops, mock interviews, etc. Additionally at Swansea, students have the opportunity to participate in the Swansea Employability Award (SEA) throughout their time at uni. SEA enables students to gain different level of awards, a bit like Duke of Edinburgh, which will be added to their transcript when they leave uni.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I find my course very interesting and I am able to balance all 3 of my languages. I have the opportunity this year to pass on my love languages through teaching young language learners at a local school as one of modules. Most of my lecturers are very knowledgeable and prepared for lectures however some, notably the French department, are dreadful and have no clear aims in what they are meant to teach us, leaving students worried and confused.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The Union is very good in making changes at the uni and organised many events both on and off campus such as Varsity, Tooters and events in the union bars. The full time officers have established good links with societies and educational departments in order to improve the uni.
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
My house is in the perfect location for going to uni and town. The rooms are a good size with double beds and large study desks. The kitchen and bathrooms are the perfect sizes for sharing between 6 students however the "garden" leaves a lot left to be desired. It is shabby, covered in gravel and the patio isn't very safe to put chairs out/ sit outside. Noise levels are quite low and you can get a decent nights sleep.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The buildings where I study are very modern and are well equipped however some of the older buildings where the sciences are studied are outdated but the uni is updating them. There are plenty of spaces in the library to study and work as well as many options for eating and coffee breaks.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Swansea has everything you could ask for- a modern city centre, many shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, the opportunity to watch a football or rugby match or go to a concert at Liberty Stadium, very good transport links, stunning views and miles of sandy beach.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are 120+ clubs and societies which caters to everyone's needs such as dance, swimming, athletics, languages societies.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Lecturers are very happy to help you with any queries, worries or concerns and generally will respond to your emails on the same day. Each student is assigned with an academic mentor who you meet 4 times a year to discuss your exams and how well you are doing with your course. You can also email them at any time with academic or personal problems.
