Overall, I'd rate my university experience at Loughborough as a 9/10! The facilities, location, activities are amazing and the friends I've met through my course and hall are now my life-long friends! The university course is interesting (albeit a little repetitive), and the some lecturers could take a more active role in supporting your studies but overall I've had such an amazing experience at Loughborough and I wish I could stay forever!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
University sport facilities are world-class.
Lecture halls have all modern technology but with old-school projectors in case written work needs to be displayed. They are all fitted with sound record systems and uploaded online so you never truly miss a lecture.
Some buildings need a revamp - I.E. Wavy Top is very outdated, but this will come with time.
Accommodation halls are all great, and cater to different budgets and food options (i.e. catered or non-catered).
Everything is in one place - making it easy to get to everything.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Feedback on exams is non-existent - hard to know what you did well/didn't do well.
Feedback on coursework sometimes useful but often generic.
Academic tutor support depends on the tutor you get - my first tutor was incredibly unhelpful and not supportive of my initial struggles at university, but my second tutor (first left the university) has been nothing short of helpful, supportive and generally really nice.
Personally I've never research our for counselling but I do know its something the university offer.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The students union at Loughborough is great for nights out - it has three nightclubs in one and is a big part of your hall experience. It becomes less utilised in other years as you're likely to venture out into town more and become less concerned with it for nights out. It provides places during the day to study, meet, eat and shop which is nice. It is quite outdated - although I am aware they are planning on building a newer, more modern SU which I'm sure will be great. Prices on general are expensive in there (during the day) which is a major drawback. In terms of facilities, its a little run-down, particularly the toilets... I've never come into interaction with the student representations but I do know that they do A LOT behind the scenes for the student experience.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Yes, Loughborough University campus is a ten-minute walk into the centre of town which has lots of shops and places to eat. Accommodation is also close to campus but close to town, benefitting from both.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Loughborough has so much to offer as a university, in both sports and societies, at serious level to beginner - there is something for everyone.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Most: lecturers are (mostly) approachable and happy to help with any questions, all slides are uploaded before lectures which is great to prep beforehand, and any readings are given with links on how to find papers which saves a lot of time and hassle. Lots of options of coursework/exam modules to suit what you achieve best.
Least: some lecturers are slow to respond to questions, sometime too politically correct
How many contact hours per week do you have?
12
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
I was lucky as with my course, completing a placement year was necessary in order to graduate. The school of business and economics provide you with modules prior to your placement to prepare you for work skills such as Excel. In addition, they have a placements team which gave you access to a vacancy portal, so finding a placement job was made much simpler. Additionally, on campus there is a student service which you can attend to get advise and feedback on your CV, Cover Letter, interview prep etc., so I feel they did make a big effort to increase employability. The university on a whole also provide two annual career fairs which gather hundreds of employers in one location for you to speak to and find out more information. Cannot fault the university in terms of this.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
In the area that I live, near Loughborough College, I feel extremely safe. The location of my house is perfect, less than ten minute walk to centre of campus or the town centre - making it ideal for both university engagement but also social engagements. Our house has everything we need, but you have to be pushy with landlords to fix certain aspects you aren't happy with - after all you're paying for it! I opted for rent that includes my bills which I would recommend as it saves the hassle of collecting payment from each of my housemates. The cost is slightly more expensive than other properties (generally, you can find very affordable property in Loughborough, just depends on the level of modernness, space and location etc.
