University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I love my university. I am currently in my fourth year, and the lectures are in depth, but are all very interesting. The student jobs team allows me to work flexible hours, which is brilliant as I can work around my degree.
I love the location, the facilities, the staff, pretty much everything!
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
I love the 24/7 access areas for when I have a deadline. There are plenty of computers and books for my course, and Psychology are also given £900 worth of e-books for the first two years of their degree, which is incredible.
I love the gym too, while it is small it has everything you will need and is incredibly cheap at £100 a year, which equates to around £8.33 a month.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
The advice centre is open all the time, we have free dental care, on campus medical centre, and counselling services.
We also have a peer support service. This allows current students to be trained to be "active listeners", following a Rogerian style of listening. Students can come and talk to us at certain days of the week if they feel going straight to a counsellor is a bit too daunting for them, or if they simply fancy a chat
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Cheap beer, plenty of events, and a lot of societies that anyone can join!
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Plenty of nightlife if you want it, lots of restaurants, a cinema, an ice rink and Plymouth Pavillions where all the best concerts are held.
Everyone is really friendly down here!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are over 100 clubs and societies, so there is something for everyone!
I was a member of PsySoc, and then Social Secretary, and last year I was chair.
I was also a member of Muay Thai, and the Welsh society.
However if there is a society you think would be great but it simply isn't there, as long as you get 20 signatures, and pass a vote, you can start your own society!
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I'm in my final year of an integrated masters, and I have enough lectures to keep me interested, and all are taught by people interested in their field, so they tend to bring the passion into the lecture with them, which enables me to actually enjoy lectures!
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Placement years are great as they allow you to gain experience for when you graduate, and the employability service allow for a lot of help with looking for a job once you graduate. This includes CV checking, and looking for career paths.
Jobs while studying are fairly easy to find too. The city centre nearby take on christmas staff in the first term. The bars nearby will hire even if you have no experience. The university themselves hire 70 bartenders a year, 50 catering staff and a number of other roles. Not to mention the student ambassador work, which is brilliant.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I loved living in student halls in my first year. The lettings agencies nearby were always helpful in my second and third year, including the student unions' own accommodation services.
There are also plenty of private landlords who do a brilliant job too.
As long as you look around, there is plenty of great student housing.
