University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
I commuted first year and that was easy, part of me wishes I had saved my money on rent and carried on commuting for my last two years. However I wouldnt have been able to join societies and I wouldn't have made the lifelong friends I have made. I thought about changing my course part way through but decided to work with the team and shape it to my desired career.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
My university has excellent facilites. The library is modern with access to apple macs and windows computers and laptops. There is also a cafe there, plenty of seating and printing facilities. There are many books in the library as well as online, and there are training lessons on how to use the facilities. My university building has departments that anyone can sign up to use from photography, printing, animation, illustration, fashion, woodwork, graphic design etc. We are properly trained to use any machinery and devices but can always sign up for more workshops. You can use any facilites no matter what course you are on.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
I have not had personal councelling but friends have and they found it very helpful, but not always available with the same person. My course has bookable and mandatory tutorials. I dont like group tutorials but my teachers always give me one to one meetings on request.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The student union are very good at collaborating and helping societies, advertising achievements and events. They also host award ceremonies and have positions available to students that want to help out. The student bar has closed down this year but within the union there is a shop, a cafe / restaurant, amazon locker, meeting and activies rooms. The interior is very modern and makes for comfortable environment. They are also active on social media, sharing details and live stories of open days, as well as highlighting days such as international womens day.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Yes, my University buildings are no more than a 10 minute walk away from most of the university halls. They are a 5 minute walk to 2 Co-ops, a Tesco express and a Sainsburys, and a 10-15 minute walk away from a main Tesco and Asda supermarket. There are also lots of restaurants, bars and pubs locally which os useful for meeting up with course and club friends. It is very convenient being within a 10 minute walk of all University halls as it makes it much easier to go home for lunch rather than buying meal deals etc. It is also very easy to find different University buildings if a lecture is located somewhere different. I am aware that other University halls are further away, as are the majority of student houses. However there is a free student bus that runs late into the evening which is perfect for students living further away. Gunwharf Quays sale shopping centre provides many students with part time and seasonal jobs, as do local cafes and supermarkets. There are 3 train stations local to all halls and student houses, so travelling home with luggage is always easy. There are plenty of local hotels and car parks for family to come and visit as well. These local amenities are also ideal for students who commute to university rather than living there.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are many different societies, there is surely something to suit everyone. There are socities that will suit different types of budgets as well, some are free, some have a membership and some have weekly fees. They are well advertised throughout the year at freshers fayre at the start of term and the refreshers fayre after Christmas. Societies are very good at posting on social media and collaborating with other groups whether thats for socials or volunteering locally. Societies can also be very flexible surrounding different students timetables so that everyone can get involved. There are also sports awards, society of the month award and many incentives to do well. There are lots of committee positions to get involved with which can really boost your CV. I am Riding Captain for the University of Portsmouth's Equestrian Club. I know people who are in Rugby, Cheerleading, Debate, Self Defence, Cycling, Choir, Quidditch, Snow and Ski, Scuba Diving, Rock Climbing, Gaming, Feminist etc
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I dont like how much contact time we have. I understand my course is all coursework so it has to be independent study but I wish we were taught more digital skills for example. I like the workshops and how they can be tailored to what our project is on.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
5
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
There is a careers building / department which specializes in careers help and employability. On my course we have a topic in which we have to make our own CV, website and portfolio. We can also be signed off to complete work placements and they csn help us find these. We also have projects where we enter competitions and get work experiences. You can also sign up for weekly emails for local jobs and teachers post on social media and email about personalised jobs to your course. We also take accreditation exams relevant to our subject. All teachers are approachable and offer excellent advice. There is also a creative skills department who you can book meetings and lessons with to enhance skills, read essays, offer interview advice and practice etc
