OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
It's honestly been great. I cried so much before coming, I was so nervous and I just put myself under so much stress and I'm not even sure why now. I have been absolutely blessed with my flatmates and people in my college are all round so friendly and lovely, I instantly felt welcomed. Living on your own for the first time is difficult but I know a city campus university just wouldn't have been right for me. I love how close everything is here, I can literally roll out of bed and go to my lectures, pop to the supermarkets on campus, see my friends from other colleges. I feel so comfortable, its something about the vibe this university has that is just so comforting and cosy. One thing that stood out to me was the celebration of black history month, it was an opportunity to learn so much about different cultures, try different food, drink different types of coffee, listen to afro beats, dance and sing, this happened the very month I came to uni and definitely boosted my uni experience from the very start
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Lancaster offers opportunities such as The Lancaster Award, there is also a Job Target App, a job centre on campus, lots of relevant information about Summer placements or placements in your 3rd/2nd year as well as study abroad schemes on relevant courses
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
The labs in the environment centre are amazing, the department has all the equipment needed to carry out any kind of investigation or experiment, the lecturers are interesting individuals themselves and are clearly passionate about the subject that they are teaching,
I really enjoy the fact that you can also take 1 or 2 minors in your 1st year in a subject that you've never done before which you can either drop or continue with in your second and third years. I hadn't heard of this at any other universities and that's why Lancaster seemed like the right university to go to as I like to keep my options broad.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
9
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The students union are really helpful, they also run a nightclub in town which are full of fun filled nights out and special events specifically for students.
The LUSU (Lancaster university students union) also run tons of societies, I have become a member of hip hop and am voluntarily teaching beginners Spanish in the culture society, I am also a member of Indian society which hosts events such as bolly nights and we just had a Diwali party.
I didn't expect the societies to be so active but because Lancaster is a campus uni, the societies are really easy to get to if you're living on campus, and I've been able to meet so many new friends through the Students Union
Accommodation
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
I am really impressed by the accommodation at Lancaster Uni. There are many different types of accommodation with their own unique feel due to being a collegiate uni, which gave me a greater sense of identity. My college halls (Grizedale) are the newest. Everything is suited to comfortable student living, there is an quad area just outside, great views of modern apartments, sofas in the kitchen for a more social feel, furnishing all new so really nice, and local ducks come for a visit every now and then which is nice
Also a nice amount of people per flat, I share my kitchen with 6 other people
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Really good, the library for example is amazing. Firstly, it is generally just a really nice area to study, there are many different study zones and sofas so you can pick one to your exact liking, there are also laptops you can use, printers, scanners, and an indoor tree!
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
I have to say I thought the city would be worse than I originally thought, honestly I didn't have very high expectations. It is pretty small however and has your shops like McD's, Marks and Spencer, WILKOs, TKMax. If you wanted to go shopping, from what I've seen there is a Topshop, Primark, New Look, Lush, JD sports, all in close proximity of one another however I would probably go to Manchester to do that kind of thing which is about an hour by train for roughly £6. That being said, you don't really need to head to town much as everything is on campus.
The nightlife is better than I thought! From what I've heard theres around 5 or more clubs (some of them are huge though like the students union club and others are tiny but really cute and different) There are pubs for miles
In October Lancaster hosted a music festival, I didn't go but I guess the city is kind of lively in that sense
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
REAAAALLY GOOD
literally a society for everything and a great way to meet people from different years in the university
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Personally, the support is good it just takes a while..In the first few weeks I was struggling with some course issues and I wouldn't get any e-mails back- I'm sure this is just due to the high amount of enquiries during the first few weeks of the first term
There are a lot of mental health notices and well being classes such as mediation going on in and around the university which lots of people get involved with and I've heard that the counselling services are really good.
I personally haven't had any issues but my friend was struggling with the high intake of work and reading and felt really overwhelmed and immediately got help by her department which I think is really unique to Lancaster and thanks to being such a closely knit campus lifestyle
