University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
University has been great so far. I have learnt so many new skills and made so many new friends.
It's been a big change but I feel like it has prepared me for the world of work, making me adapt to change faster and handle more responsibility, the university has been very supportive in the transition from college and continue to be just as supportive now during my second year.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
The facilities here are fantastic.
We recently had a brand new state of the art building (has a library and student services and careers department in) and brand new accommodation (which are award winning).
The facilities in my department are also very new and very up to date, we even have specialist programmes and computers and brand new labs.
There are plenty of work spaces available, lots of which are silent areas.
The other facilities on campus are really good, plenty of toilets, shops, nice places to sit, lots of seating in the canteen area and the transport links nearby are good too.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Tutors have regular module support hours and are always reachable by email, I have never had an issue with communication. The feedback on the assignments comes back quickly and is very individual to yourself and is really constructive and helpful.
I am aware of the counselling services in the new catalyst building and other services like it, which are readily available and you can have regular appointments with these.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
The students union are really involved at EHU.
They organise welcome week every year for freshers and run events most days of the week for the entire year.
They have regular meetings and really fight for the students voice.
They have opened their own shop and a subway for the students benefit and listen to problems such as car parking and are working to resolve the issue.
They are friendly and are very social media active and approachable.
Personally I dont really use the SU because I live off campus so sometimes the activities on are quite late (especially if its a social wednesday in the SU bar).
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Ormskirk is a small market town but there are lots of student focus shops and bars.
As a student off campus I dont really make use of these but from what I have heard the bars in the area are really popular and run events weekly.
There is lots of transport links and shops for students to use and shop at, and lots of greenspace to enjoy.
It is like a rural town but without the limitations of a rural town.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
The clubs and societies vary a lot.
There run each week and you can get some money to start them up, there is a society for everything.
I don't attend any of these.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
I like the way my lectures are taught. The powerpoints are informational and include diagrams and pictures and cater for every learner type.
Practicals are also a good practical way of learning, these are in depth and we learn about how to use specialist equipment and how to do follow up reports.
Fieldwork is also really practical and adds fun to the degree.
The things I like the least is the lecture lengths, sometimes we can work for up to 3 hours however we do have breaks inbetween. Sometimes these lectures times could be shorter and more condensed.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
16
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
EHU have a large careers department that offer constant support, workshops, career fairs, recruitment fairs, 1-1 appointments, skill workshops etc and are a constant factor during the academic year, presenting powerpoints specifically to the degree programme you're on, explaining sandwich placements/year abroad/job applications/cv writing etc.
Careers week is a well attended event each year in my uni, its a week filled with mock interviews, application processes, interview techniques, post grad study ideas, teaching routes etc.
The uni has many highly respectable lecturers meaning that we have great connections to mingle with and get in touch with. Past students also come in and tell us where they are now and motivate us (these are called Alumni).
