OVERALL UNIVERSITY RATING
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Studying at the University of Glasgow has been a fantastic experience. I found my course very interesting and engaging, my lecturers - incredibly helpful and often inspiring, and my coursemates welcoming and fun. The city offers a lot to do, and the universities has a range of clubs to cater to every taste.
Job Prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
Careers services frequently publish placements (available either specifically to Glasgow University students or to anyone).
The School of Life Sciences also publishes placements on their page, which is really helpful when searching for available positions. Many lecturers are also open to hosting enthusiastic students in their labs (there are both paid and volunteering positions).
In terms of transferable skills, the Careers department organises a series of courses.
Course and Lecturers
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
Favourite aspect of the course: there are lots of sessions for data analysis, experimental design, discussion of literature, which are very interactive and engaging + invaluable for developing one's critical thinking. There are also many lab hours, providing useful practice and giving a taste of experimental biology research.
Least favourite aspect: there are many student-led presentations in the final year of the course that are not always as fascinating to listen to.
How many contact hours per week do you have?
30
Students' Union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
There are two student unions, GUU and QMU, with the former exhibiting a focus on "popular culture," with a very popular night club (Hive) playing dance/R&B/hip-hop/top-chart pieces. QMU plays alternative/indie/rock music.
Both clubs contain bars, places to eat, and are a meeting place for many societies. They also organise different event nights.
Uni Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Facilties are quite good, with good laboratories, a large and comfortable library, a fantastic and spacious gym with a range of classes + pool+ sauna, etc. The food in the university canteen and different cafes is quite mediocre.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Glasgow is a fantastic city with a very vibrant atmosphere. There are numerous restaurants, pubs, fast food places, bars, night clubs, and Glaswegian people clearly like a good time. Scottish people are incredibly friendly and welcoming to foreigners.
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
There are a range of societies and sports clubs. All the sports that I can think of have a corresponding team, and there are societies ranging from poker, chess, to crafts, dancing....
People are welcoming, and it's easy to get integrated and make friends.
Student Support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Academic support is excellent - your academic supervisor sometimes also serves as a life mentor, in a way (though of course, experiences can vary). Lecturers, esp. course coordinators, seem very invested in the success and well-being of their students, and genuinely are looking to enhance student experience.
Feedback on assignments is OK. No personal experience of counselling, though I've heard it's not excellent (very long waiting lists).
