University rating
Tell us about your overall university experience so far.
Overall a fun experience with some great teaching professionals. However student services are sorely lacking, accommodation is both hard to find and overly expensive and the student experience is geared towards those with access to parent's credit cards rather than aiming to please students from every background.
Facilities
How good are your university's facilities?
Library is woefully stocked and poorly built. Although they remodelled only a few years ago, major problems exist, such as there being only 18 toilet stalls total (9 female, 9 male) for a library that can seat during exam periods about 2000 people. Other study areas are small and usually closed on weekends.
Student support
How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).
Although another vastly over-subscribed service, the friendliness and helpfulness of student services at St Andrews are a credit to the university.
Students' union
What do you think of your Students' Union in terms of student representation and facilities?
Provides many events, however still here you cannot find the cheaper prices you would at other universities.
Local life
Is your university in a good location in terms of distance to accommodation and local amenities?
Town is geared around student events as we make up almost have the town's population!
Societies and Sports
How would you rate the variety of societies/sports?
Again, students make these societies great. Hundreds are available geared towards anything you can think of. The student union provides great financial support.
Lecturers and teaching quality
What do you like most and least about the way your course(s) are taught?
World renowned lecturers with some very interesting courses. My criticism would be that first and second year courses tend to be over subscribed, and teaching suffers for it.
Career prospects
How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?
St Andrews is a fantastic, well sought after name for employers. However the careers centre's resources are lacking and if you are doing an arts subject (ex languages), advise for future career prospects is non existent.
University halls
What do you think about the safety, condition, location and cost of your accommodation?
Although I would say the atmosphere at many catered halls is fantastic, the accommodation provided is extremely over-priced and over subscribed. The university can barely fit it's first year students into accommodations so almost nothing remains for anyone else. Furthermore, students who are not from affluent backgrounds sometimes have to find accommodation outside of the town, as in town prices are extravagant and there there is an alarmingly low number of budget rooms provided.
