Pros include the plethora of societies to get involved with, excellent accommodation and interesting modules. Cons include constant dismissal of staff concerns by management, unequal union opportunities and middling optional modules.

classes aren't physically accessible and covid caused a shift in learning that didn't fulfil expectations. most lecturers are empathetic though

great staff, quick repairs and good location. can be loud and is definitely expensive.

The best aspects of the university are the people. Everyone who I have met has made my experience here incredible. I have met the most kind and supportive people, who have brought me happily through my university experience. Leeds is also a great place to study, but I have only been able to use the facilities and attend lectures in the last 2 years. As we were the covid starting year we weren't actually able to step onto campus really in the first year, or meet any lecturers, or attend any in-person things. This was a really strange experience and one which I think has lead to me to feel a slight level of disconnect from the uni. I feel very connected to my friends and Hyde Park and my life here, but I do feel I lack in many connections with the uni. Yes this may be my own fault to some degree, I have never felt like I've understood societies or how to sign up or what they do, as we weren't properly introduced to them in first year, nor could we attend them should we have signed up. Despite this, however, I have really tried to throw myself into uni this year and have been going in almost every day to use the amazing libraries or the communal union space. I think generally the campus has a really nice feel - but I have to say the building names are very confusing! Worst aspects of my experience have got to be the us vs them feeling of our first year. Rather than feeling supported through the struggles of covid, it felt like we were the universities enemy. We had dogs and police and security scouring our halls, handing out fines willy nilly. A lot of people really struggled with loneliness during this time and I did not feel as though the university helped with this at all. I understand that this was a really unique experience and not one that anyone was prepared for, but I do think it has had a knock on effect for many since. A lot of people are nervous about attending in-person things, as we got used to online work. I feel as though the university should understand this more and continue the option of recorded lectures or online seminars, rather than completely scrapping this. Ease-in and ease-out technique. I also feel as though the university did not correctly compensate their student for this year, whether this is an issue at government level I am not sure, but I do feel as though the university took very little pity on us during this time. We are now left in a situation of huge debt despite having missed a year of of teaching.. I also think that the University should make their mental health services should be made more clear. Im sure if I was actively looking, I would be able to find something, but I dont think one should have to be actively seeking help to know where they can find it. University is a big struggle for many and I think that protecting emotionally vulnerable people is important. I also think that there should be some degree of support in terms of night-life. University is a place where many experience drinking or come into a space where drugs are present for the first time - this is an unspoken truth. I dont know how this would work but some level of awareness or support would be invaluable, to avoid harm and other problems that may occur. All in all, however, I do believe that Leeds is a great university and I would recommend it highly to anyone. I completely love the city.

This course has been brilliant. As someone who did not know exactly what aspect of media I wanted to go into, I think that this was a great option, with many areas covered. The main issues I have had with it, however, is the assumption that one already possesses all the skills to be a photographer or filmmaker. One is expected to watch YouTube videos to learn invaluable industry skills, rather than be taught by the lecturers who send physically in front of you. If I wanted to do this I could have stayed at home and saved a lot of money doing so. I wanted to feel as though the lecturers wanted to impart their knowledge of the technicalities in depth, rather than have 1, hour long session on each (editing/ lighting/ sound). I do not feel as though we were taught any of this at all. I know that this industry is one of learn on the job, but being in a learning environment should not be the same. Of course I must also mention covid. In first year, as we could not access any equipment due to restrictions, we missed out on a full year of learning with regards to this area. I do not feel as though we were properly given to time to make up for this. I was very excited to use and learn how to use all manner of different cameras etc. but feel as though I havent had this chance. I also really wish that we had learnt more specific techniques. such as dark-room photography, film photography etc. as these are things I doubt I will experience in life. As this is such a broad course I never really felt as though anything was covered in much depth, I guess this may have been what I signed up for, but I do think that the university should work on this. Maybe after the first year allowing students to fully focus on one area to hone in on more. I also think that more practice modules should be made available as the facilities are great, but many do not know where they are or how to use them.

Lupton is the most affordable option, meaning that it is the least nice of the halls available. Despite this I do think that it is very well kept by the halls cleaners and managers. The gates also make it feel very safe and secure. I do think the halls really lacked any communal area or space for sitting inside the flats as this would have created a more community feel. Being in the covid year it was obviously especially hard being in halls, but the location of Lupton was really convenient in this year. Being close to supermarkets, a park and shops made it a nice place to have been over this time. I do not know how convenient it would have been to get into University every day and I am almost slightly glad that I did not have to do this. I dont know if this is available but I do think that students in further away halls, such as Lupton or Oxley should be offered some kind of bus travel compensation.
